I am so grateful for Lush Valley Food Action Society, for so many things, but today I’m extra appreciative for their volunteers who came to help me harvest my garlic at the farm. They harvested about 1500 heads in just 2 hours 😅, that would have taken me 2 days! Thank you LUSH 🧄🧄🧄🧄🧄

Look what is making a cheery cherry comeback for market this weekend! These tasty little suckers are known for having great shelf life, and I had heard people mention that they have had them with their holiday spreads and charcuterie boards, so I tucked some away to test that theory, and here they are.
The berry cherry of many names is back!
This will be my last hoorah at the Comox Valley Farmers' Market for the year, so come come them while you can.

Well that was an intense few days of harvesting the rest of the winter squash. The race was on to give the squash those 3 beautiful sunny days to cure in the field, but also to get them into the greenhouses today before the weather changes. One greenhouse was still full of onions that had luckily just finished curing, but still needed to be trimmed and packed for storage, so that was a task in itself. And as a little bonus extra curricular activity we also cleared the finished squash plants from the patch and used them to mulch a few bare beds nearby. It was a bit of extra work to say the least, but the idea was that it would make cleaning up and prepping these beds for garlic that much easier when that time comes, which is soon.

This year was a bit challenging for my winter squash patch. I was about a week late getting them into the ground so they were already a bit stressed from outgrowing their little pots. Then, the day after they were planted, we were hit with a crazy wind storm and extra hot temps, and unfortunately about 30% of my plants didn’t survive that extra shock.

When the rest of the patch filled in it looked hopeful, lush foliage and lots of flowers and fruit on the borders, red kuris sprawling out on grassy edge and tiny pumpkins creeping into the summer squash rows.

At the end of the day the harvest wasn’t as heavy as I’d planned for, considering how many bed feet I dedicated to the crop. But, thank the stars, because I think we used every available surface and shelf in the greenhouses for curing space, and I’m not sure what I would have done with any more! It all worked out.

Big thanks to the hard work and help from Carter and Kira to get this monumental task done before the skies open up, and to my mom for intuitively knowing that I’d need another chrome rolling shelf this week.

There will be lots of squash coming to market and the farmstand these coming weeks. Bonus tip, to cure them at home you can use them for Fall decor until it’s time to switch to Christmas decor, then eat them up!
