This week the yearlings are intensive grazing cover crop with our Gallagher North America tumble wheel system.
This year’s cover crop includes forage peas and oats, vetch, clover, alfalfa and chicory. All of the cereals are too immature to have any seed or grain production so what we are looking for is a high diversity of really protein rich forage.
At this time in the grazing season lots of our tame grassland is dry from summer heat or starting to get over mature. In order to maximize weight gain on our cattle we like to change things up and mix in some super lush grazing options.
Did you know as plants prepare for winter they start sending sugars to their roots instead of their leaves to prepare for winter, this makes the plant substantially less tasty and the cows consume less and are naturally less satisfied with the buffet we are providing.
