Flaghill Ranch Grass Fed Beef

Flaghill Ranch Grass Fed Beef Grass fed & finished angus beef, raised on our family ranch with out the use of any added hormones. What is Grass Fed Beef?

The idea behind grass fed beef is that the animal is fed only pasture grassland and hay in the winter time. At Flaghill we make all our own hay, so you can trust your beef has been fed the very best at every stage of their growth. Our beef is typically slaughtered at 20-22 months of age which allows their muscle to grow slowly, creating superior quality meat. Our Ranch

Flaghill Ranch is a family

farm in East Central Alberta that prides itself in raising high quality Black Angus Cattle. These cattle formerly known as Aberdeen Angus were imported to Canada from Scotland in the 1800's. The development of the railroad across Canada, also allowed for cattle to be imported on steam ships and brought west to pasture. Black Angus cattle have been a popular staple in the Canadian cattle industry ever since! Angus are known for their docile disposition, good mothering, and great tasting meat. This breed boasts very uniform marbling, which is the important distribution of fat through the meat. The meat produced by Flaghill Ranch is no exception, our cuts are tender, juicy, and sure to please! Ranchers at the turn of the century were forced to leave a calving cow behind on a trail drive. They carefully tied a rag on a willow bush to mark the area they would return to for the cow and her new calf. The willow bush was growing atop a hill in the vast prairies and soon the ranch, Flaghill came to be. Flaghill Ranch was initially established in 1903 by our Grandad's dad, Bert Smyth who started homesteading the land where we currently ranch. He grazed steers on the same grassland our cows thrive on to this day. Our family began building our current herd in the 1980's and we are continually pleased with the generations of strong mothering cows raising high quality beef for your family.

This week the yearlings are intensive grazing cover crop with our Gallagher North America tumble wheel system.

This year’s cover crop includes forage peas and oats, vetch, clover, alfalfa and chicory. All of the cereals are too immature to have any seed or grain production so what we are looking for is a high diversity of really protein rich forage.

At this time in the grazing season lots of our tame grassland is dry from summer heat or starting to get over mature. In order to maximize weight gain on our cattle we like to change things up and mix in some super lush grazing options.

Did you know as plants prepare for winter they start sending sugars to their roots instead of their leaves to prepare for winter, this makes the plant substantially less tasty and the cows consume less and are naturally less satisfied with the buffet we are providing.

Would love to hear all your questions and opinions🤷‍♀️

Modern convenience with ancestral cooking knowledge. We are pretty obsessed with the easy to use tallow tube, currently have one in the camper, one in the house and one in the fridge on reserve. It’s an easy way to transition from reliance on seed and vegetable oils- all oils have a place but when you’re looking to cook hot tallows your friend.

Link in our bio to order your tallow today, now offering shipping and local delivery. 📦

Have you tried our cooking tallow?

Our “Flaghill Ranch Cooking Tallow” launch has been slow and purposeful, quietly telling our valued customers by sharing complimentary tubes in their beef orders. Casually adding them into our Father’s Day collab. Dropping a few social media nuggets.

And noww….. as fall approaches we are ready to shout it from the roof top, we shipped our very first tallow tubes today and that felt like ripping off a bandaid. We will let you know how it goes in 2-20 business days iykyk.

Shipping products as a small biz is super expensive so we always encourage locals to take us up on our complementary hand delivery or central “meat ups” when available. But if you’re in Alberta and you want to try our cooking tallow, send us an order we are OPEN for business.

Breeding season means the big daddy’s are out to pasture. These five bulls are destined for the main herd.

For our fellow cattle producers; what ratio of bulls to cows are you using? And is everyone semen testing these days or 🤷‍♀️?

All these gentlemen came from the same bull breeder, send us a DM if you want our favorite “bull families” number.
