The Neebs Bees honey harvest was in full swing last week! 🍯

We are absolutely thrilled with the beautiful variety of liquid and comb honey we brought in. With the harvest wrapping up, we’re already onto the next big step: winter treatments. It feels crazy to be thinking about winter already, but proactive hive health is what keeps our Buckfast colonies thriving year-round. Keep an eye out for our fresh harvest hitting local shelves soon!

Queens are in! 👑🐝We just pulled our latest batch of Buckfast queens from our mating nucs, and we couldn't be more thrilled with the genetics we’re working with this season.

These aren't just any queens—they are officially Group 1 Rank 1 Hygienic, tested and verified by the incredible folks at the OBA Tech Transfer Program So, what exactly is "hygienic behaviour" in bees?

Hygienic behaviour is a highly desirable genetic trait where worker bees act as the colony's natural immune system. This trait alows the bees to detect diseased, damaged, or Varroa mite-infested brood (pupae) hidden beneath the wax cappings.

To test for it? The OBA Tech Transfer Team performs a "freeze-killed brood test." They use liquid nitrogen to instantly freeze a specific, circular section of capped brood on a frame. Then, they place the frame back in the hive and check on it 24 hours later.

By breeding our gentle, highly productive Buckfast queens with these top-tier hygienic traits, we’re building colonies that are naturally stronger, more disease-resistant, and much better equipped to handle pest pressures on their own.

Yesterday, Henry and I got the chance to visit the UoG Honey Bee Research Centre in Guelph! We even got a special private tour of the research facility thanks to Janet!

I highly recommend checking it out--they have thought of everything and it bodes very well for the beekeeping industry to have such an outstanding facility in Ontario! The pictures only capture a fraction of the facilities at the research centre!

BEAR ALERT

Well, it turns out someone wanted a midnight snack, and they didn’t care about our standard retail hours.

We’re sad to report that one of our hives was completely destroyed last weekend. While we’re absolutely gutted for our hardworking bees, we know that sharing a home with nature means dealing with the locals—even the big, furry, honey-loving ones.

IMPORTANT WARNING
This wasn’t just a solo scavenger. A mother bear and her cubs have been spotted moving through Hay Swamp area. Mother bears are incredibly protective of their little ones, especially when they’re hunting for food (or raiding apiaries).

If you live near the swamp, walk your dogs nearby, or live in the immediate area, please take extra precautions:

• Keep pets on a leash at all times. A dog surprising a mama bear is a recipe for trouble.
• Secure your property. Bring in your bird feeders, secure your trash cans, and keep a close eye on outdoor pets.
• Give them space. If you see them, do not approach. Turn around calmly and leave the area.

We are currently cleaning up the wreckage and doing everything we can to extra-fortify the rest of our hives.

Why choose Buckfast bees? Developed by Brother Adam at Buckfast Abbey, this legendary hybrid is famous for being incredibly gentle, highly productive, and disease-resistant. They are awesome to work with---I rarely wear a bee suit to work with my hives.

👨‍🌾 About the Breeder:
I’m Aaron Neeb, and I’m bringing a decade of commercial experience to this business. Having spent the last 10 years working with Bill, Matt and Rosemary Ferguson at Ferguson Apiaries in Hensall along with my own hives, I’ve mastered the science and art of bee breeding—from grafting and managing mating nucs to preparing queens for shipment across Ontario and Canada.

I'm putting that same level of precision and care into every colony we produce here at Neebs Bees.
