Yesterday it rained - the kind of rain farmers and gardeners love! Especially after a long, hot, dry spell.
My dad told me an older farmer had told him about how much an inch of rain on an acre of land amounts to. Here are the (wild!) numbers:
1 inch of rain on 1 acre = about 27,154 gallons of water
Converting that to weight:
* 27,154 gallons × 8.34 lb/gallon = 226,500 pounds of water
* 226,500 lb ÷ 2,000 lb/ton = 113.25 short tons
* 226,500 lb ÷ 2,204.6 lb/metric tonne = 102.7 metric tonnes
So:
✅ 1 inch of rain on 1 acre = approximately 103 metric tonnes of water
Or, in tonnes:
* 0.5 inch = ~51 tonnes/acre
* 1 inch = ~103 tonnes/acre
* 2 inches = ~206 tonnes/acre
Our farm is 95 acres, that means, if all 95 acres received 1 inch of rain:
* 103 tonnes × 95 acres
* = ~9,785 metric tonnes of water
That’s nearly 9.8 million litres of water falling on the property from a single 1-inch rain event.
Because that rain fell over 24 hrs, most of it would be absorbed by the soil soaking down to a depth of 4-8 inches in loam soil!!
