Our Story
Our family has a passion for great food that respects animals, the environment, and people. We’re crazy about anything feathered.... in fact, we’re just kind of crazy, hence our farm’s name! Here on our tiny rural lot of three acres, we raise small batches of pasture-run chicken, as well as selling microgreens and eggs from our free-range heritage breeds of chicken and duck.
Respectful and caring farming practices are at the heart of our farm. Our birds are given the freedom and ability to practice natural behaviours and live fulfilling lives. Our laying hens, ducks, geese, and guinea fowl roam freely during the day, returning to roost in the barn or coop at night, safe from local predators such as coyotes, skunks, and racoons. Our meat-chickens are given the full run of a large, fenced piece of pasture leading out from our barn, protecting these naturally ponderous birds from daytime threats such as dogs and maintaining proper biosecurity for all of our flocks.
We strive to produce food that reflects our desire to preserve the environment for our children. In addition to the chance to forage naturally, our birds are given locally-milled grain, reducing our farm’s carbon-footprint. The cost of organic and GMO feed is too high for us to maintain our flocks on these foods presently, but we are open to both if customer interest makes it possible! We don’t treat our birds with antibiotics, instead preferring to rely on good biosecurity and standards of care to keep our birds happy and healthy. We also maintain a large diversity of heritage breeds in our flocks, both for our own enjoyment and from a belief in the importance of genetic diversity. Our microgreens represent a locally-grown, organic, and highly nutritious source of food for our family and yours.
Ultimately, our passion for animals and the environment ties in with our devotion to real food. A plethora of scientific research exists demonstrating the superior nutrition provided by meat and eggs from pasture-run birds, but our own tastebuds and conscience provide us with all the evidence we need. As a family who make everything from chicken stock to Sunday-morning croissants and preserves from scratch, we don’t settle for less when it comes to the quality of what we eat.
