People often ask, 'What do you do with old boars?'

(And I'm not talking about Carl in the picture; I'm talking about the pig!)

When they get too big, or you need new genetics, the old one has to go somewhere. But we don't send ours into the human food chain.

Did you know that Berkshire pigs are a lard breed?

Their lard was once valued even more than the meat itself.

​Yet, we've become a society that is scared of lard. Let's face it, the word itself sounds a bit claggy!

​So, what’s a girl to do when she has a freezer full of rich lard? (Besides fry up a batch of chips, because I'm not scared of lard!)

​Make soap! 🧼

​For a few years now, I've been buying soaps that aren't loaded with the chemicals that promise to keep me young and beautiful.

Because I was too lazy to figure out how to make my own soap.

It was about time I knuckled down and made my own, especially since I already have the beautiful, raw ingredients right here.

​It turns out, that our rich Berkshire lard makes an incredibly moisturizing, gentle bar of soap!

The Berkshire breed is renowned for an excellent temperment and check out this boar.

Pigs can't sweat so they need to wallow to cool down.

We have natural wallows all over the farm but the boar has to be kept separate and we have to make sure his wallow has water.

Carl loves playing with water and hosing down the boar keeps him and the boar happy!

The ponds we have will dry up as summer goes on, unless we get enough rain 🌧 to keep them topped up. 🤞

While it lasts the dogs love playing in the water and they use them to go to cool off.

The pigs use the muddy edges to make wallows. They can't sweat so they use them to cool off when they are foraging around in the fields.

I'm doing something wrong lol
