Autumn is getting quite the baby belly. I don’t know exactly when she’s due, but I’m guessing it’s within the next 2-3 weeks. Last time she kidded she gave me triplet bucklings and she raised them all with no supplementing, other than me making sure they all got their share of colostrum. She was my only doe that got bred in the spring so it will just be a warm up to my actual kidding season 🙂 Any guesses on when and how many?

My breeding and kidding date sheet has become very full. Out of the 17 does I had confirmed standing breeding dates with Jack, only 3 did not come back into heat 21 days later, so they all have 2 dates 🤦🏻‍♀️ I am actually shocked because some does were bred multiple times to where I thought about taking them out of the pen because they were taking attention away from the others.
I have never had issues with my does not catching, they were flushed, Jack has a great track record and had does successfully bred a month or 2 prior. Maybe it was stress of the move for him, or maybe because my does had not had a Buck around for almost a year they got too excited and weren’t actually in heat, but they did cycle pretty much exactly 21 days after the first date I had for them. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Now my kidding season is pushed to the end of Feb beginning of March, with only a couple at the beginning of February which isn’t what I was hoping for, as I find better growth in the colder months, and it’s easier when all the babies are the same age, or at least in bigger groups, but either way I am excited about the coming season’s kids. Has anyone else experienced this with a large group of does?

Our meat birds are finally out of the barn and onto the pasture! We had to do some minor repairs to the tractor to make sure Nugget stays out of it and she made sure to help 😆 🤦🏻‍♀️
These birds are 3.5 weeks old. I feel like this batch is on the smaller side but they still have 4.5 weeks to go, so hopefully they will get some good growth by then.

Today was just what I needed to get my confidence moving in the right direction. My trainer worked with my horses the other day when I was at work, and so today she came to give me a lesson so I can work with them on my own with what they are learning. Sparkles gave me a run for my money, like literally 😅 I was out of breath and sweating after her time in the round pen, and then Sunny made me look like I knew what I was doing which evened it out perfectly 😂 🤦🏻‍♀️ I have a long way to go, lots to learn, and today’s experience has put me back on track to work towards our future goals.

Back at it today! Sunny and Sparkles had a great session with DF Performance Horses. We are focusing on tying and getting used to the round pen. I am excited to get some confidence back so I can continue to work and learn with both of them. It feels like a fresh start.

I ended up deleting my post about culling my chickens, not because I wasn’t confident in my choice as a farmer, but because I started to receive nasty messages.
I see a lot of posts that blow my mind, posts I don’t agree with and that make me say WTF, but I would never, ever send hateful messages to the creator over them. Usually I screen shot and send them to my farmer friends and we complain and laugh about them 😆 (That really happens)
I share a lot on my page, and I make very little doing it. I’ve only been a farmer for 4 years and so it’s mainly about education and just sharing my journey.
I don’t like culling animals. For 1, I do have a heart and for 2, it comes at a cost for me.
Because I am a first generation farmer I have had to start from the bottom and I do struggle to grow. Me and my husband both have full time jobs and side jobs, and still we sometimes struggle, farming is expensive. I have to make choices that make the farm strong, let us grow and that continue to allow us to contribute to the community. These decisions are sometimes hard but they have to be done. This is farming.
I could have just left the post up and just responded back with the same ignorance, or just ignored and blocked people because the people that send these messages and make those comments have obviously never stepped foot on a working farm, but stuff like that does get to me because I am human, and so I deleted it from my page.
I will continue to share but today I didn’t feel like dealing with it.

After a long trip from Saskatchewan, Manny has arrived! I will make sure to keep a close eye on him for signs of shipping fever over the next few days. He’s settling in well and I am happy to finally have him home 🙂

One of the tools I’ve purchased for continuing with the training of my horses is the horse tie ring. We installed them today and I will show you how they work very soon. Fyi, I have never tied my horses for fear of pulling back and so this will be a game changer with my training!

It doesn’t get more exciting than this when you are a breeder trying to build your herd!!! I can’t wait to introduce my new to be herd sire tomorrow!!
