The dahlias are all labelled and we’re ready for when our first frost comes. Last year we had our first frost on October 14th, but some years it waits till well into November. Any guesses on this year’s first frost date?
Frost kills our dahlia plants and because we have to dig them out variety by variety after frost they all have to be carefully labelled so we know which is which as we dig and divide them to be stored for next year.
Come grab yourself a bunch before they’re gone! We’ll be at Trout Lake and Riley Park farmers markets this Saturday. The farm stand on Westham Island is stocked for the weekend too!

After a week of very foggy days we had some lovely sunshine lighting up the barn while we made bouquets this morning. The flowers are slowing down with the shortening days but we picked every stem we could find to decorate your dinner table this weekend.
Come by and grab a bunch, make your own bouquet at the stem bar or choose a few ornamental pumpkins for your doorstep or table to celebrate the season. The weather will be perfect, the food fantastic and we’ll be serving up some seriously beautiful seasonal flowers.

Somehow we’ve reached October which means fresh flower season is will be over soon. Shorter days, cooler temperatures and stormy wet weather all contribute to a declining harvest. We usually get our first frost sometime between mid October and early November which takes out the majority of our crops.
The heirloom chrysanthemums are our one crop that has yet to start blooming this year and are well worth the wait! They’re planted safely inside our tunnel and prefer to bloom during the shorter days, usually starting in mid October. Keep your eyes peeled for them!
For now we are harvesting dahlias, this lovely dramatic amaranth, the last sunflowers, plenty of eucalyptus, celosia, ornamental grasses, marigolds and a few other flowers. And ornamental pumpkins too!
Find us at Trout Lake and Riley Park farmers markets on Saturday and the Kitsilano farmers market on Sunday. The farmstand on Westham Island is stocked for the weekend too!

Still picking a lotta dahlias over here! The weather is shifting and the field has changed a lot over the last 10 days. Fortunately the dahlias don’t really mind the cooler nights we’ve had lately.
Frost will put an end to the dahlias, but we typically get our first frost sometime between the second week of October and early November so we should have a bit of time yet.
Dahlias, eucalyptus, amaranth, celosia and plenty more will be at farmers markets this weekend. Find us at Trout Lake and Riley Park on Saturday and Kitsilano farmers market on Sunday.
The farm stand on Westham Island is stocked too!

Happy last day of summer!
It was a beautiful day and we spent it picking lots of flowers and replacing the poly on this tunnel.
The plastic wears out over time and we’ve never recovered this tunnel before. I wanted to get it done before the weather turns and while we still have some sunny dry days. Glad to have it ticked off the list!
It’s so clean and much brighter in there now and the plants will appreciate that as the days get shorter and the angle of the sun keeps sinking over the next three months.

We’ve had such beautiful days this week! The dahlias are loving it as much as we have been.
Come visit us at market this Saturday to take advantage of the weather and the dahlias. They’re on sale this week since we have a real bounty right now.
This week we managed to get the cover crop mowed, prep a tunnel to be reskinned this weekend, did some epic weeding and clean up in that tunnel, and picked piles flowers for florists, DIY bucket orders, auction and farmers markets.
It’s the last weekend of official summer, so come grab some blooms to celebrate the shift into fall next week!

September flowers rolling in nicely! We’re happy to see the dahlias blooming well now, we’re digging into the eucalyptus patch, saying goodbye to the asters, excited to see the bounty of celosia, and still pumped on the amaranth. And there’s a little surprise patch of feverfew that’s so nice to have again too.
There are still several weeks of fresh flowers to come but the end isn’t in the far distance anymore. Hope you’ll come savour the season with us!

Somehow the calendar flipped this week and it’s suddenly September. The days are getting shorter, the angle of the sun is lower, the dew is heavier and the mornings a bit cooler. And in a few days the kids are heading back to school!
There’s still many weeks of flowers before the end of our growing season but there’s a shift at the farm starting to happen.
We planted some spring flowers this week and will plant even more next week so that they can grow over the winter. New dahlia varieties are blooming at each harvest, the mums are getting taller in the tunnel and we’re harvesting our last sunflower plantings.
The cooler is jam packed with flowers for the weekend and we can’t wait to share them with you!
Marigolds, sunflowers, zinnias, asters (the last of the season!), eucalyptus, celosia, amaranth and lots more are coming along to markets this weekend.

The Queens of Summer have arrived! We’ve had a handful of dahlias each week for a while from a small early crop but the summer blooming field dahlias are kicking into gear now. Right now we’re up to 4-5 buckets per harvest but soon SO many more will be ready.
So much work goes into producing this crop and we are either digging, handling, checking, planting, weeding or otherwise caring for this crop every month of the year. Now is when we reap the reward when they bloom in all their glory and we remember that it’s so very much worth it!
