Somehow the calendar flipped this week and it’s suddenly September. The days are getting shorter, the angle of the sun is lower, the dew is heavier and the mornings a bit cooler. And in a few days the kids are heading back to school!
There’s still many weeks of flowers before the end of our growing season but there’s a shift at the farm starting to happen.
We planted some spring flowers this week and will plant even more next week so that they can grow over the winter. New dahlia varieties are blooming at each harvest, the mums are getting taller in the tunnel and we’re harvesting our last sunflower plantings.
The cooler is jam packed with flowers for the weekend and we can’t wait to share them with you!
Marigolds, sunflowers, zinnias, asters (the last of the season!), eucalyptus, celosia, amaranth and lots more are coming along to markets this weekend.
Find us at Trout Lake and Riley Park farmers markets on Saturday and the Kitsilano farmers market on Sunday. The Cropthorne Farmstand is also stocked for the weekend.

The Queens of Summer have arrived! We’ve had a handful of dahlias each week for a while from a small early crop but the summer blooming field dahlias are kicking into gear now. Right now we’re up to 4-5 buckets per harvest but soon SO many more will be ready.
So much work goes into producing this crop and we are either digging, handling, checking, planting, weeding or otherwise caring for this crop every month of the year. Now is when we reap the reward when they bloom in all their glory and we remember that it’s so very much worth it!
Find them and lots of other late summer blooms at Trout Lake and Riley Park farmers markets on Saturday and the Kitsilano farmers market on Sunday.

It’s aster season! These blooms are long lasting and come in some unique soft colours. Lila spent some time hanging out in the aster patch during harvest this afternoon too, maybe her current favourite? 😻
You can find us with these and piles of other great August flowers at three farmers markets in Vancouver this weekend.

Also snapdragons are on sale, so come snap up some of these classic summer blooms. They’re cat-safe if you have a curious cat that likes to get into your bouquet. Lila promises she hasn’t sampled this week’s harvest.

Barn owl babies!
Barn owls are a threatened species and we put up an owl nesting box a few years ago to both support barn owl in our area while also hoping that by having more barn owls nearby would help with rodent control.

Every year August arrives and the annual field just explodes with life and colour and texture. The seed was ordered and the crop plan was made way back in November/December/January while dreaming about bringing this view back to life again.
Unfortunately the field isn’t open to the public, but you can still get your hands on these blooms! Come visit us at market this weekend. We’re finally back at Kitsilano farmers market on Sunday 🎉. And you can find us on Saturday at Trout Lake and Riley Park farmers markets. The Cropthorne Farmstand is stocked for the weekend too!
Sunflowers, zinnias, asters, marigolds, amaranth, strawflowers, statice, snapdragons, dried cloud grass and more will be at markets.

It’s zinnia season! We grow more varieties than I can count and most years we trial a handful as well. These classic summer blooms will be turning up in bunches, by the stem, in mixed bouquets and our bulk buckets for the next few months.

Every week from April to November we make one version of a mixed bouquet to take to farmers markets and put out at the farm stand. We see what’s plentiful in the field, is special or particularly seasonal and comes together in a nice colour palette.
Sometimes we seem to fall into making an almost identical bouquet to the same week as the year before, which is entirely natural since the flower field and the precise time of year we are in leads the design.
Some parts of the year it can be a real challenge to make a cohesive bouquet and others times it can be such a delight with a bounty of options.
Brittany Ayton has been the mixed bouquet magician for the last few weeks, and will be handing it off to someone else next week.
You can find these as well as piles of marigolds, sunflowers, snapdragons, dryable flowers and plenty more at markets this weekend. We’ll be at Trout Lake and Riley Park farmers markets on Saturday and at the Cropthorne Farmstand all weekend.

It’s hot as heck this week, so here’s some visually cooling blooms from the last few months to counter the heat wave. Larkspur, sweet peas, delphinium and anemones.
Hot days mean more irrigation, earlier mornings, shorter work days, lots of bucket washing in the shade and lots of water bottle refills. 💦

Marigold season is on! We picked the first few stems last week and now there are a handful of bunches blooming.
They are long lasting, bloom in fun summer colours and are loved by pollinators. What more could you want? A little rain last night freshened them up nicely and we’re bring them to market this weekend.
You can find us at Trout Lake and Riley Park farmers markets on Saturday. We’ll have lots of sunflowers, the last of the feverfew and sweet peas, some statice (great for drying!) and several other types of blooms.
The farmstand on Westham Island is stocked with mixed bouquets, sweet peas and sunflowers too.
