This is a nice write-up. The heifer we brought home proves that he has some genetics up here in Canada as well.

🌴 Cattlemen's Profit Roundup Speaker - Blake Hojer 🌴

The attendee loved Cattlemen's Profit Roundup session will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., focused on the topic of rebuilding the United States cowherd and what producers need to prioritize when breeding the foundation females of this years-long rebuild. Blake Hojer will be speaking on a panel regarding best practices for heifer development.

Blake Hojer is the manager and co-owner of Hojer Ranch, LLC, located in Lake Preston, South Dakota. Established in 1991 by Alan and Pam Hojer with the purchase of 10 Gelbvieh cows, Hojer Ranch has strategically expanded to a diverse seedstock and feedlot operation consisting of 400 registered Gelbvieh cows and 1,000 head of cattle on feed annually. Priding himself on being part of a true second-generation family business, Blake has had to use unique and calculated decision-making while navigating the growth of a newly established operation. In addition to raising Gelbvieh seedstock, the sourcing, breeding, and development of commercial Gelbvieh-influenced females has become a primary part of the business. With the development of the "You Pick Em, We Breed Em" program, Blake has managed the breeding and development of over 6,000 Gelbvieh females over the past decade. These females have been sourced to ranches across the United States. Blake is a 2008 graduate of the University of South Dakota with a bachelor's degree in education. Blake and his wife, Jennifer, reside in De Smet, South Dakota, and have four children: Jace, Jaden, Kaylee, and Brynn.

I said to Amanda before we went up to Wishlist that we weren’t going to plan anything and we were just going to let God decide.

I am heartened by so many things. There were a lot of little wins this past weekend for some folks that sure deserved and could use some. As a father, the win for me is seeing joy on Aella’s face. When we were walking the barn and visiting with everyone Amanda remarked how much we wanted to buy from so many different people that do so much to support the junior program and the breed and we are very proud of what it means to be part of the Gelbvieh community.

This is all a long preamble to say how much of a privilege it was for us to purchase “Nora” (yes, Aella already has a name) from a family that I have come to respect and cherish so much. Watching them at farmfair last year and how they function as a family unit was inspiring and being able to observe the National calves for a week made this purchase completely stress free and one of the easiest choices we didn’t even know we were going to make.

We stuck to the mission of listening to God, and I think Aella is going to have a hell of a good first experience thanks to some pretty amazing folks who go above and beyond, without fail. Thank you also to Brad for coming onto the board, this is going to be a fun couple years.

We are excited to show off the cattle from the herd we’ve been quietly building and we are hopeful to bring a bull to the futurity next year as well for peer review.

On that note, two other special thank yous. To Twinview for all their work the last 8 years making the futurity go… thank you for setting the breed up for success. And also, thank you to Don and Lorna Okell for trucking Nora to Duchess and their general kindness to us over the years, we are truly blessed to be surrounded by such kind people.

We are very much looking forward to an incredible 2026 ahead!

Big thank you to Triple G Ranch Gelbvieh for purchasing this sweet little heifer at the Gelbvieh Wishlist Sale this weekend. We are thrilled that you decided to add her to your herd and we are beyond excited to see her out and about this coming summer with Ayla! We are excited for her future in your herd and wish Ayla all the best in her adventures with her new buddy!!

Thank you to all the organizers and volunteers and the Gelbvieh Association of AB/BC board members that help to put on the Gelbvieh Wishlist weekend and to Aaron Birch and Joe Barnett for their work over the years in putting on the Canadian Bull Futurity. The weekend is always relaxed and enjoyable to take in.

Thank you to all the GAA/BC Junior incentive sponsors that have put money into the pot this year. Kaden, our second oldest, was selected as the recipient of the $2500 sale credit this year and he was lucky enough to be able to bring home a sweet little heifer calf from AKS Gelbvieh. This heifer calf is an exciting addition to the herd as she is out of an NGC Aftershock 15A daughter. Aftershock is a bull that we sold to Winders Golden Gelbvieh years ago and we are thrilled to get some of these genetics back in the herd. (This was before we changed our prefix to BNH)

Now we take a pause to take some much needed time to recuperate after fall events, before we head into the new year and our winter kidding and calving.

Research from the United States Meat Animal Research Center confirms that Gelbvieh cattle lead the pack in terms of pounds of beef produced per pound of cow exposed. This efficiency starts with their remarkable maternal qualities—Gelbvieh cows are top-tier when it comes to fertility, calving ease, and maternal instinct. They’re known for high-quality milk production, which translates into heavier weaning weights without increasing feed costs. Modern Gelbvieh are red and black, often with homo polled and homo black options available.

On the growth side, Gelbvieh calves show exceptional early growth rates and high feed efficiency, giving them a natural advantage in producing more beef per cow. For ranchers, this means fewer resources spent per pound gained and ultimately, higher returns. By adding Gelbvieh genetics to your herd, you’re not only boosting your herd’s productivity but also setting a foundation for long-term, sustainable beef production.

Invest in Gelbvieh—because in the world of beef, efficiency is everything, and Gelbvieh genetics are proven to give you the edge. We don’t care if we are your first, second, third or even fourth breed to cross with, we just want to hear your success stories as you reach that next level of beef improvement and production by adding the Gelbvieh secret weapon to your herds. Do you have any Gelbvieh in your commercial crossbreeding rotation? We would love to be the dirty little secret your neighbours are curious about. ieh

Aella and I are almost Willie Nelson to the home of Gainer the Gopher for her to attend her first Function and Finesse auction sale.

I was listening to the wind and heard the voice of my Grandfather as I reflected on my first auction sale when I was a kid with him and my dad.

There’s something very unique about having a sale and putting on a sale and hosting people to exhibit your hard work, your tears and fears and dreams and the tension and excitement that goes along with it. The cattle business is a people business and more than most, we know that the gentlemen at Parkbeg put that first, and I told Aella she wasn’t going to school today because today is sale day and sale day is always an important day.

The only thing I’ve ever cared about is being a good father, setting my daughter up for success and surrounding her with the best people. The junior show last year cemented in our heads that we have an absolute gem of a couple in our breed that truly care about the people in it and their future success. I could say that about many of the people around that junior program as we have met some incredible people through the years, but today it’s specific love and gratitude for Joe Barnett and Aaron Birch for truly being leaders in their respective fields and leading by example in so many ways. We look forward to seeing the new Gelbvieh trailer at Maple Creek as well as we drive by. It’s a great time to be raising maternal cattle in the business and these are some of the best, in the best maternal breed in the business, and we look forward to cheering them on as I’m sure they will do for us as we continue to grow and build our program.

Everyone congratulates after a sale, I’m congratulating before, because the important stuff is already a success, now is the fun part of where they go from here! See you soon!
