Many of you may be looking for an update on BamBam and Gilmour since they were weaned and put out in the pasture with the herd.

Gilmour immediately found a surrogate mother and was confidently nursing with her other calf. He’s well and still likes to hang around with BamBam.

BamBam (bottle fed since the day he was born) is more of a loner. I was sad thinking that he wouldn’t remember me but I was certainly wrong about that. He still loves to come for snuggles and I get to give him scratches every day…. However he has not thrived being off the milk replacer and it’s too late to put him back on it. I’ve tried all recommendations to help him put weight on and I’m now going against our structure of grass fed and finished (with him only) to help him get the extra calories he needs to put weight on. He is on a calf starter as a supplement until he is where he needs to be. Then I’ll get him back to just the pasture. He is certainly a happy little guy and I am quite fond of him. I’ll do what we need to do to help him. Plus it’s pretty fun to be out there scratching and feeding him every day.

I know we’re all about the beef (and poultry and pork) but can we all take a moment to appreciate the beauty of this caramelized onion and cheese sourdough loaf that I perfected today! Can’t wait to cut into this.
