A brief history of our Homestead in the making

Hancox Homestead was established in 2001 after my husband and I decided to take a life gamble, upped sticks from England and as they say the rest is history. In our time here we learnt to adapt from postage stamp living to acreage living. With our two border collies Buster and Douglas in toe, who couldn’t believe their luck or number of trees to pick to p*e on! We embarked on what was really blind optimism, hope and a whole lot of guess work.

Our adventure has seen us recreate how we thought, how we lived and today we are still evolving. We have educated ourselves on Canadian wildlife, my first encounter with a raccoon was one I won’t forget! Woodlot management, environmental studies and of course equine/animal sciences to name a few. It’s hard to try to explain to people who/what is Hancox Homestead. Who we are, is a small family creating a whole new branch of our family tree, we are ‘The Canadian Crew’. We are trying to live our best life & make the best of our Homestead.

As a child I spent time in rural Norfolk on my families Dairy farm, those moments spent molded my dreams of farm life and a self sufficient way of living. I really never drifted away from that dream and hubby embraced it as do our children.

As far as the business side of Hancox Homestead its not your usual fit within the box, its a little bit of everything based on a whole lot of family love that we chose to share with the public. There are fifty majestic acres which is mostly woodlot, an abundance of nature and stunning sights to be found along the trails. Today we are proud registered breeders for black Clydesdale’s, miniature horses, alpacas and more. We have hosted many themed photo shoots, unicorn parties and my handmade continues on since I started selling in 2005. We are now listed as a fiber farm with our Championship winning alpaca fibers which has been a process for the last few years and we hope to see more people understand the quality of alpaca, developing an enthusiastic following. The alpacas are a current fave with our customers, from kisses to walks and the occasional face flob!
