Late summer and early fall are incredible in Ontario. Our farmers are harvesting an amazing variety of fruits and vegetables and when quality Ontario or Canadian product is available, that is 100% where we want to be.
🍁 CANADIAN FIRST
We’re proud to support Canadian farmers and growers. When Canadian product is available at the quality and value our customers expect, we buy Canadian.
But Canada has a growing season. Our climate means we simply can’t grow everything Canadians expect to find in a grocery store year-round. Some products have short local seasons, while things like bananas, pineapples, mangoes, avocados, lemons and limes can’t be commercially grown here in meaningful quantities.
As we move from September toward winter, our choices become more limited. Some Ontario products transition to Canadian storage crops, while others must come from warmer climates. For certain items, the U.S. becomes one of the only practical sources capable of supplying the quality, volume and value our customers expect.
When Canadian isn’t available, we constantly evaluate our options based on country of origin, quality, freshness, availability and price. An item may come from Canada one week and another country the next — or you may see two countries represented at the same time as growing seasons overlap.
🇨🇦 THAT’S WHY COUNTRY OF ORIGIN MATTERS
We hear you. You want to know where your food comes from so you can choose Canadian whenever possible. We agree. Clear country-of-origin signage is a priority for us. We know we can do better, and we’ve been blitzing our Produce Departments to identify and fix the gaps.
And when Canadian isn’t available, consider switching to something that is. Imported berries? Try Ontario apples. Look for Canadian carrots, potatoes, onions, cabbage, squash and other crops available well beyond harvest.
Look for Canadian. Choose Canadian when you can. Support the people who grow food right here at home. 🇨🇦
