Rose Valley Maple Syrup

Rose Valley Maple Syrup Rose Valley Maple Syrup produces all grades of maple syrup at our facility in
Laird Twp. (On GPS, our city is Laird, ON, not Echo Bay.)

We sell from our farm gate all year or at the Johnson Farmers' Market in Desbarats, ON on Saturdays from June until the Thanksgiving weekend in October. We have other products besides syrup: candy, butter, sugar, granola, etc. all made with our pure maple syrup.

We are not yet making much maple syrup. Actually we've made just an extremely small amount. This weather is unbelievable and it's past mid March. We get 1, maybe 2, days of above freezing and then, Boom, back to freezing and MORE SNOW. On those "warm" days we bring in a few hundred litres of sap, but that's not enough to start a boil. By the time it warms up again, that sap is no good. So far it doesn't look like it's going to be a very good year. Hopefully something happens soon. Keep your fingers crossed.
While I was walking today I noticed all the lateral lines and drop lines were frozen solid. Norm has had to dig out main lines that don't usually get too far buried. But this year they are about 40 to 50 cm under. (some pictures below)

A few more decent days and the tapping will be all done. The amount of snow in the bush is prohibitive, even with snowshoes. I'm very proud of Norm and his helpers for the work they've accomplished. Hopefully there will be a few days of rest between the tapping and sap run.

We absolutely hate to do this but, we're going to have to raise the prices on a couple of our products. The cost to us on our jugs has been going up. We have kept your costs down over the last couple of years but things are getting too expensive for us to not raise our prices too. The only jugs affected by an increase are the 4 litre and 2 litre jugs. We are keeping the smaller jugs at the same price to try and help our regular friends and customers.

I know with the economy as it is in the Sault, this is going to affect everyone. I hope you are still able to purchase some of our products. We're still making our best maple syrup. We sell only the pure product. It is not "infused" with anything else.

Norm is working daily to prepare the bush for the new syrup season but it is sure hard on him with all the snow we've been getting. With the temperature swings we have no idea when the run will start so we have to be ready any time. This has been our coldest day so far this winter (-34 C) so who knows if any bush work will get done today because even the equipment is having a hard time. Stay warm and we hope to hear from you soon.

If you can't make it to the Johnson Farmers' Market Desbarats on Sat. Aug. 23, at least visit the Forest Garden Store on Trunk Rd. in the Sault. They are holding a large fund raiser for Harvest Algoma.
You can still get our maple syrup products in the store too.
