Next was the ginger beef; one of my favorite dishes ever since I was a kid. When done right it is a great balance of tender meat, crispy texture outside and saucy coating. I have so many nightmares of dried out, burnt, and overly sweet strips sitting under heat lamps from the buffet line. Bangkok Kitchen does this dish right. The meat was done with a dark and rich tamarind-based sauce, and there were so many vegetables! It was complimented by a side of delicate and aromatic coconut rice. Every time I try to make coconut rice it never comes out that great. Sawat really understands how flavors pair and the importance of texture. For noodles Alisha picked the Pad Thai with peanuts which was another spicy dish of chewy slurpy goodness. Finally, we had the Green Curry with shrimp. It went beautifully with the coconut rice and was the consistency of a thin chowder. It was jam packed with fresh al dente vegetables and enough large sized shrimp for three hungry adults to share without throwing shade at each other for taking too many.

We finished the meal with fried bananas and coconut ice cream. I greatly appreciated every bite, as it cooled my pallet from the spice. I encourage all of you to visit this diamond in the ruff. The owners work very hard for what they have built, and it is up to us to encourage them to keep going.

P.S. Don’t tell my trainer.

We started with classic green onion cakes, which allowed me to gage the technique used for a simple dish that is found everywhere in Asian and Oriental cooking. They were light, a little sweet, and not overcooked or soggy. They were a perfect pair for one of the best soups I have ever had in my life. The soup was called Tom Kha Kai, and every bite featured a different combination of flavors. The bamboo shoots still had a little crunch to them, the chicken was tender, and the coconut broth coated the tongue in way that only full fat coconut milk can. The flavor that really surprised me was the lime leaves. They were left whole, much like bay leaves, but were tender enough to chew on. My taste buds were very surprised, and I will make sure to use them in my own cooking at home from now on. The lemon grass was fragrant and not overpowering at all. This soup is a must have with every visit to this gem. We then had the Papaya salad which started out a little bitter, but quickly turned to the heat that Thai food is so famous for. Charm made sure to ask us if we wanted the full level of heat; and of course, we did. The tomatoes cut the bitterness, and the peanuts added a roasted nutty awesomeness that changed the spiciness to something even more amazing.

Let me introduce you to our first food adventure; this is the Bankok Kitchen. Opened decades ago, by Sawat Panyo. you can tell as you walk in that it is a homemade labor of love. It is small; maybe ten tables at most, you can hear the gentle clanking of pots on the stove, and the clinking of glass coming from the kitchen. It is early spring, and the sun is low. It sends a warm golden light through the curtains and bounces off the intricate metal stitched details on the custom menu’s sitting on the tables. We are greeted first by Charm; our waitress who was kind and smiling, and more than happy to make suggestions. Sitting down waiting for our drinks we had so many interesting artifacts of the Thai culture to look at. Our table was covered in pictures of old stamps and diagram illustrations of how to tie tradition skirts and head dresses. Sawat shares so much more than her food with us by creating this comfortable and engaging environment.
