We couldn't let barbecue season come to a close without mentioning this delicious sweet and spicy rub. Cinnamon and chiles are a natural combination, and this blend will definitely impress. It's one of our favourites for steaks and although it's great with beef, we think it goes especially well with bison.

This handy blend of traditional pickling spices can be simmered with vinegar to infuse it with flavour for spiced pickles of all kinds: cucumbers (obviously), beets, beans, carrots, and any other vegetables you can think of.

Pickling Spices can also be used to add flavour to stews, braised dishes, beans and rice, and can even be ground up, mixed with a little salt, and used as a dry rub for roasted or grilled meats.

The Silk Road Spice Merchant is a Calgary-based company that specializes in herbs and spices from around the world. We are looking for a reliable, hardworking, professional person to fill a permanent, retail position at our retail location in Edmonton (10818 82nd (Whyte) Avenue).

The position is for Friday to Monday (32 hours per week) from 9:30am - 5:30pm.

You will:
- learn all about our spices and blends (don't worry — we'll train you)
- participate in general production duties and store maintenance such as jarring and bagging spices, filling orders, restocking products, cleaning, counting inventory, etc.
- provide stellar customer service by chatting with customers about food, talking about our products, making recommendations, and processing sales

You have:
- exceptional attention to detail and a positive attitude
- a good knowledge of food and cooking with a passion for furthering that knowledge
- the capacity to work unsupervised and take responsibility for your productivity
- the ability to safely lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds
- the ability to be on your feet for most of the day

This is our favourite spice reference manual. It contains everything you’ve ever wanted to know about a huge range of herbs and spices, and every page has beautiful full-colour photographs. There's information on chiles, making spice pastes and roasting spices, and even a short recipe section. Everyone from the professional chef to the novice home cook will find useful information in this fantastic book.
