You learn alot from your milk filter.

You can be as sanitary as a surgical preparation - but you will still see all the fur, hay and wood shavings that fell into your pail.

Sometimes you may see small curds of milk, a sign of possible underlying infection. The white milk filter also highlights the various milk colors that signal an issue - any hint of pinks, yellows, greens or browns!

This particular filter shows more though. This milk came from a doe that has been self nursing for 15 months straight! We chose to let her just live until the inevitable mastitis diagnosis. Tonight, I noticed she didnt have her typical "post grain nurse" and when I checked her udder it was firmer than I'm comfortable with.

So I put her on the stand for the first time to hand milk out a little excess milk to give her relief. To my surprise, she was very easy to milk and the milk appeared completely fine.

Of course I know there could be subclinical mastitis, and we will likely send a sample off to be tested. We don't find the CMT tests the most accurate for goats.

However, it does put into question the management of self nursing does and the risks associated with long term self nursing :)

When I put her back in the pen, she immediately went to have a drink - Remi didn't enjoy the teat dip 😂

How can you tell when ANY animal is enjoying attention?

When you stop, they try to get closer to you! This is Ghost (Fort Wood Ghost in the Shell) and she is one of our does who LOVES attention.

She will block your path to get scratches, and follow you around and actually lean into you to request more 💕

We clean our doe pen once a week, every single week, regardless of weather. It takes between 1-2 hours and it is my husband's LEAST favourite thing about keeping livestock.

However, once it is done for the week it's a great feeling!

We use a modified raised floor system that reduces our bedding consumption, but we still make some "nests" for them as they prefer to sleep on bedding when given the choice 😴
