Today is Freehand Farm’s 6th anniversary! what a wild ride it’s been. I wanted to share some photos from the first year or two to remember how far we’ve come from what it was. I’m so proud of what this place has become, a sanctuary, a community, a home, a peaceful escape. I’ve learned so much along the way and look forward to continuing to improve and make this a happy place for every soul that lives here. Thank you to all the customers who have supported us along the way. You’ve become far more than just “customers”. Truly, I would be nowhere without the trust of our clients. Happy birthday to the farm!

The cows on the 3rd day after we moved here got covered in burrs. The burrs on the farm were so bad and the cows were practically feral which made for a messy situation.

We got Mexico with the farm. He was about 9 yrs old and still intact so was extremely aggressive to other animals and had to live alone

We picked up Atlas from the auction at 6 months old. Turned out he had a bilateral inguinal hernia and pneumonia which ended up being a long visit at OVC in Guelph with low chances of recovery

One of the cows got ulcers in her eyes from the burrs. Being mostly feral and not friendly we had to chase them down in the field with a stick + needle situation in order to sedate and treat injuries

The wood burning stove was outside and no amount of wood ever seemed to make the house hot enough 😂

I picked up Mika in a parking lot in Cambridge at 8 weeks old from someone who did not want her anymore. And so began a beautiful friendship

Got to move my childhood horse home 🩷 featuring the horrendous fencing

Learned to drive the tractor

Adopted Jack Jack so Mexico could have a friend

Mud. Everywhere. The drainage was non existent

There was alot of “Jimmy rigging”

Best cat I ever had - Bonnie

I’ve been able to welcome so many animals into the world

Wish I kept this little guy

Flooding and rotting fences

More fence projects

Funny farm 💛 Dani Kerfoot

Bacon when we first rescued him

What Does Your Monthly Board Actually Pay For?

“I recently saw a comment in a local horse group suggesting that boarding rates are far higher than the actual cost of caring for a horse. From the outside looking in, it can be easy to assume that board simply covers hay, feed, bedding, and basic daily care. In reality, operating a safe, well-maintained equine facility involves many additional expenses.

Along with the direct care of each horse, monthly board helps cover:

• Property rent or mortgage
• Business and liability insurance
• Electricity and utilities
• Facility, arena, and equipment maintenance
• Fuel for the equipment used around the farm
• Manure removal
• Repairs and replacement of items damaged through normal wear and tear
• Water and feed buckets, hoses, pitchforks, cross-ties, and automatic-waterer parts
• Cleaning supplies and everyday necessities for shared areas
• Payroll for the dependable people who help provide daily care
•Truck & Trailer Maintenence

The list is nearly endless—and many of these expenses continue to rise.

Board is not simply payment for a stall and a few bales of hay. It supports the people, equipment, facilities, and behind-the-scenes work required to provide consistent, professional care while maintaining the safe and comfortable amenities horse owners expect.

There is an enormous amount of time, responsibility, and expense involved in properly caring for horses and operating a quality facility. Boarding rates reflect the true cost of providing that level of care—not just the items that are easiest to see.”

Folks, your kids' lives matter.

If your a parent or grandparent looking to get a child a horse,

Listen to me,

This is Absolutely NOT the time to be cheap or skip steps.

First,

Enroll your child into an established lesson program that is respected and priorities horse care, ground work and riding.

Unless you're a professional horse person, don't skip this.

Start building a good support system within the horse community.

When you first start to look into a horse for your child, listen to advice from professionals. Bring your trainer with you when you visit potential horses. Listen to them, not the kid. If cost is a concern, horse ownership may not be the right choice. Consider leasing.

If you buy, then partner that horse with your child under lesson / training guidance awhile.

Horses can kill your child because you were too cheap to do the proper steps to help make the Equine adventure safer.

Your kid matters too much for you to cut corners on training or the right horse.

It’s the best feeling seeing the horses enjoy their freedom, minus holding my breath hoping nobody slips and falls 😂

Mimi is thriving since moving to the farm, but is still a little curious about these things called “horses” 😂
