Waiting out the rain in the van

Cria season is always exciting, until its tragic. Late afternoon yesterday I noticed one of our ladies was in labor. This was good in a way because the heat of the day was less and would be safer. I pretty quickly noticed there was no progression!
Gloves on we tries to feel for toes and nose. First thing we found was a foot bent at an angle that could stall labor, great, easy fix and out popped 2 feet. Allowed mom to labor on her own. Still absolutely no progress. Back in we go to see if the head isn't in the right position and our worst fear, neck flexion! The babies head was turned back towards its bottom. As you can imagine, with their long necks, this is an impossible situation.
This is the 2nd time we have seen this on our farm.
Vet was called immediately. We knew the baby was lost, saving mom was the priority.
Just over an hour later, a fetotomy was preformed and mom given meds for pain and infection.
This morning mom is out with the herd and eating. She seems to be ok which we are happy for.
Our hearts are slightly broken and our souls a little shaken, but we have more babies still to come and we remind ourselves these births are fairly uncommon.

Born in the early morning hours, around 6:30am, our first Arriba Linea Alpacas Amplified baby! I am pretty certain he is black but he keeps rolling in the dust pile!

Sounds like a good enough reason to start knitting!

Note: i recognize this may or may not be factual. I do however believe idol hands make for an idol mind. My mother in law knit for almost her whole life and while she certainly had some cognitive impairment she could still knit some lovely pieces almost without thought. My grandma was the same.
Crafting in general, I believe, is good for you mind and soul.
