pastello

These lovelies were started last season in the dark days of winter just after New Years. Planted out in the changing weathers first week of March and putting on their first blooms June 1st.

This variety never disappoints. My corms are always purchased at for their superior quality and I prefer to support Canadian wholesalers.

Missing these kitchen sink views this season and my early morning garden walks with coffee checking on the raised beds.

Enjoy their beauty. They come and go and are worth every moment of joy and peace they provide.

Are you growing any ranunculus this season?

lately

Well, tomorrow is the last day of January. The last day in a month that has felt like it has lasted a whole year. This winter has brought me back to my childhood. I have photos of my brother and I playing on snow piles as high as they are today. Temperatures that kept the snow on the tree tops. Nostalgia is a warm blanket for me amidst what feels like a very cold time in history. But hope is a muscle I continue to train. There is no other way.

So many things have happened. In my life. In the world. I have had moments where I cry spontaneous tears for the freedom I have to go for a walk without fearing for my safety. I cry tears of genuine worry for my niece and nephew and the world they are inheriting. I cry tears of fatigue from the daily struggle this month has been trying to teach to a group of my students who struggle with their own hardships.

But then there are the flowers. In between editing report cards, I have been designing a mood board for the only wedding I will flower this year. The palette is green and violet tones. An absolutely perfect choice for a late September ceremony when the garden will be abundant in texture and color.

FUN FACT: Although I received just over 30 wedding inquiries this year, and a few that had potential, none of them were weddings I wanted to design. Except this one. This one is for a friend and a fellow creative. And so it’s the kind of wedding that I get to truly dig into my imagination. But more than this, it’s a wedding that tells a love story. Every tiny details holds meaning and truly captures the spirit of the bride and groom.

I’ll be growing a bed of Lavender Voyage II Lisianthus and a whole bunch of other whimsical, ethereal filler flowers. I was so happy to find sells Lisi plugs in my area. Thank you Melinda 🙏🏽

The vision for this wedding is both earth bound and free spirited. Exactly how I feel in my soul. One foot on the ground and the other ascending to the skies.

Here’s to flowers in the winter to keep us grounded in beauty and dreaming of brighter and lighter days ✨

new year

It’s been a little over a month since I’ve posted. I’ve tried many times but just haven’t felt inspired enough to share what’s really been going on.

This year, I don’t have pictures of ranunculus corms being woken up or tips and tricks for growing light set ups this year as I normally would. Why you ask?

My winter has taken on a very different shape since our house fire on Christmas Eve day. What began as a simple decision turned into the next 6-8 months being displaced from our home. We had a serious fire that managed to damage or destroy all of our belongings. As we had just finished renovations, I had thankfully packed most of our keepsakes and photos into the basement.

We are rebuilding from the ground up. This was a truly cathartic experience for me. Two years of growing and harvesting new flowers for dried flowers stock are being thrown away this week in the demolition phase of our home. Nothing is going as planned. And this is the beautiful part. That’s life. One day you think you have it all figured out and the next you day you don’t. It’s simple.

Since we will be without our home until the summer nothing that you normally see here will be happening. One thing I can say is that whatever flowers I do grow will be used for a precious wedding and giving in kindness this season. The mental load of having to itemize the contents of our home is wearing on me this week and when I’d normally be waking up my corms, I’m storing them with family for next fall.

Something beautiful came out of the fire and that is a deepening of my faith that God always provides. Thank you to every single one of you who are aware of what happened. For your calls, messages and concern. Many have asked how they can help. Please help by having a fire kit with a fire blanket. Please help by having a plan and practicing what to do. Please help by teaching by your children what to do. That’s the best I can ask.

I hope that today you know how precious life is and that the things we own are truly insignificant. I’ll be a little quieter here for the month of January and hope to be more present as we get through the rubble so to speak.

Peace be with you flower friends 🕊️

Well, school is almost out for the holidays. I turn 45 tomorrow and we are in our third week of Advent. This week is about finding JOY. Seeing JOY. Seeking JOY. But I woke up today and realized for me this year it is about trying my best to BE JOY. Things have been very busy it’s moving a whole life to another place. I@haven’t been feeling joyful to be honest. I’ve been feeling burdened by learning so many new things. Amidst the grumbling and tired nights, I am trying to find JOY in the simplest things. A new recipe. A warm under layer. A silly thing the kids do during the day.

I was asked to finish the school year so feeling very grateful for that peace of mind and continuity. Most of the presents are wrapped and under the tree. Christmas baking begins tonight. I love the rhythm as we approach winter. Life feels like a steam engine most of the year, but at this time it all comes to a slow halt. Very much looking forward to resting and recharging over the break and choosing which fliers I will grow next year. Things will be simple and that feels like the way forward.

Here are a bunch of market bouquets from two seasons back. I will definitely be growing a whole row of Cactus Zinnia. That texture though…

Are you feeling JOYFUL? You can be honest ❤️

…and even with snow on the ground, the flowers bring joy. This is why I love dried flowers. These are all natural colors. How incredible. Thankful for the flowers as the days become shorter and the light more scarce. A simple crate of mixed bouquets making me smile.

light

Playing with some presets and learning how to take better photos of the flowers with my iPhone has been an ongoing hobby of mine. I used to take photos with an old Russian manual camera in University. I loved the crinkly light it captured and have always been curious about photography as an art form. Finding the right light can be tricky sometimes, but there is always light. Always.

As we approach Advent, I can’t help but scurry around the house putting candles in each room and twinkle lights along the porch railing. This is truly my most favorite time of year. A time to rest, reflect and rejoice in the life and love of Jesus.

If you also observe Advent, I hope you are finding the time to slow down and notice the light wherever you can throughout your days. Twenty four days of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love ✨

Progress reports are finished. Marking is almost caught up. New units begin. New celebrations to prepare for. The school year ticks away.

Today after class I needed to get outside. A neighbor had an entire oak tree of leaves fallen and she allowed me to take them for the gardens. We chatted as she helped me fill 2 trailers full to tuck in the gardens for winter. Grateful to her, and for a sense of community in this sweet little neighborhood. Once dinner was done, I sat down to start in on some shadow boxes. Muscles are aching from standing the past feed days making bouquets. As I nestled into my office space, I immediately felt calmer picking through the dried flowers, choosing one by one and settling into the evening.

I don’t think there is anything more peaceful to me than creating with flowers except growing them. I am having fun creating small batch collections to offer at market. Sneak peek in the coming days of what will be available for holiday gifting ✨
