🐴 Crocodile: The Spotted Legend of Indio
Some horses win classes. Some become champions. And every once in a while, a horse comes along who becomes part of equestrian folklore. Crocodile was one of those horses. 🐴✨

Crocodile was actually registered as Rose Ridge Dynamite, a 1964 Appaloosa gelding by Burnsides Chief Of The Pampas and out of Desert Lepor-E. Tw***ie Nissen and her husband, veterinarian William β€œBill” Nissen, discovered him during a horse-buying trip to Louisiana in the mid-1960s.

The future jumping star reportedly cost only about $25. His memorable show name was inspired partly by his Louisiana beginnings and partly by the mottled skin around his eyes, which reminded Bill of a crocodile. 🐊

Crocodile certainly didn't look like the conventional show-jumping star of his era. Standing nearly 18 hands, he was enormous, with an unmistakable blanket of Appaloosa spots across his hindquarters. Beside the much smaller Tw***ie Nissen, he made an unforgettable sight.

And then he started jumping. πŸ”₯🐴
In 1969, during his first year of showing, Tw***ie and Crocodile cleared their first 6-foot fence at Indio, California. They soon became familiar faces on the West Coast show circuit, competing from Indio to Santa Barbara and attracting enthusiastic crowds wherever they appeared.

By 1971, the pair had earned the Pacific Coast Hunter Jumper And Stock Horse Association β€œB” jumper championship, having taken the reserve title the previous year. But their most memorable achievement was still to come. πŸ†
In February 1972 at Indio, Crocodile and Tw***ie faced the Knock Down and Out Jumper Stake.

The enormous spotted gelding charged toward the towering wall, gathered himself beneath his rider and launched into the air.

They cleared an extraordinary 6 feet 9 inches. 🀯πŸ”₯

It was a spectacular jump that secured the victory and created an image that still captures the imagination more than half a century later.

Just imagine being in that crowd: an almost 18-hand Appaloosa thundering down the line, Tw***ie balanced above him, and a wall standing considerably taller than most people waiting ahead. Then, in one tremendous effort, horse and rider were airborne. πŸ΄πŸ’¨

Crocodile became a genuine crowd favorite. Family recollections describe him entering arenas and nickering while looking toward the spectators, almost as though he understood that people had come to see him.

Yet behind all that size and jumping power was reportedly an exceptionally gentle horse. ❀️

Away from the huge fences, Crocodile could become a quiet family horse, demonstrating that the same animal capable of thrilling packed grandstands could also possess a remarkably kind temperament.

Eventually, Crocodile received a retirement ceremony at the famous Cow Palace before returning to the Nissen family ranch. He lived into his twenties, leaving behind photographs and memories from an extraordinary era of American show jumping.

More than 50 years later, that famous photograph of Crocodile and Tw***ie soaring over the wall at Indio still says everything.

Power. Courage. Partnership. And spots. πŸ΄πŸ†πŸ”₯

Here's to Crocodileβ€”and all the spotted powerhouses of the past who proved that greatness comes in every color. ❀️

Long before she made her mark in international dressage, Kathy Connelly was flying around cross-country. Here she competes at the 1970 U.S. Pony Clubs National Rally at Ledyard Farm (Mass.), where she won the β€œA” individual.

16.2 hh built like a warmblood! Sweet, snuggly, in your pocket mare. Happy to hack out alone or in a group, just wants to be your bestie! Best suited as a family horse, flatwork partner, or dressage mount, or would make a lovely broodmare.

Reduced price to $12,000 if sold by October 1st.

🐴 Townsend

He can be spooky and is best suited to a confident junior or amateur, in a professional program. Has been on lease for the past two years with a young professional in the US!

L fee to be discussed to the right program.

PONIES

🐴 Beaverwoods Trident
For L – coming 6 yo Welsh pony gelding.

Miles in the Trillium Modified Pony this year as well as Gold Shows last season. Easy going with minimal prep at shows.

Good mover, jumps a 10, auto changes, very brave and honest.
Lease at $10,000 to a professional program.

🐴 Fluttershy
For L – 9yo Medium welsh pony mare

Miles in the A Circuit Medium Pony this season and Children's Pony last year, as well as miles on the Trillium Circuit.

Flutter is an easy keeper living outside, barefoot, and lives well in a herd. She is super affectionate on the ground and loves to be fussed over.

She is straightforward to the fences, and ridden by a petite junior, but has enough barrel to take up a more leggy rider. Well suited for the Trillium or Gold circuits, and could also dabble in the low jumpers.

AVAILABLE TO TRY AT PALGRAVE SEPT 22-27

Offered for Lease at $5,000 off property, or free in barn lease plus insurance at Sherwood Farm.

🐴 Orchard Hills Dolled Up
For S or L - 6 yo medium palomino pony mare.

Barbie Dream Pony in the making! Super cute mare, moves and jumps cute, has shown all summer in the Trillium modified ponies with consistent results! Ridden by tiny juniors easily, straightforward ride.

Lives outside in a herd happily, currently doesn't need shoes. Super easy keeper. Would excel in a Short Stirrup or Children's Pony job.

In the ribbons at Trillium Champ out of a competitive field of 20+, including a 4th place in the under saddle!

Seriously the cutest - green, hence her pricing, but ALL the movement and flash of a division small. Jumps anything, lead changes are almost finished, and moves so flashy.

Has shown the local circuit and Trillium this year, always in the ribbons.

For lease at $5,000
