CHERRY TOMATOES 🍅

Sweet, snackable, colourful, and currently multiplying faster than is reasonable. Toss them in salads, roast them, throw them in pasta, or just eat half the container on the drive home like nature intended.

An Io moth caterpillar! Gwen was reading some info about them while I was petting him and then read “covered in sharp spines that release extremely painful venom at the slightest touch” 😃 oh! Okay!

Every day is Earth Day 🌎: on-farm conservation

Not every “weed” has to go.

While we’re weeding, we make a point to leave milkweed where we can. It’s an important host plant for monarch butterflies and a valuable food source for other pollinators too.

A little extra space for the plants that belong here can go a long way 🦋🌿

PLANTS MAKE THEIR OWN WAX

Many fruits and vegetables naturally produce waxes as part of their cuticle; the protective outer layer of the plant.

It helps reduce moisture loss and protects against sun, heat and other environmental stresses.
You’ll find it on things like, blueberries, cabbage, squash, and so many more!

Basically, it’s built-in plant armour 🌿

Recipe time 🤌

Mediterranean Bowl 🥣
This one is easy and perfect to throw together on a busy day.

1/2 a cuke
1 bell pepper
1/4 cup dry quinoa (~1 cup cooked)
2 tbsp Tzatziki
1 handful mixed nuts
2 tablespoons feta cheese
1/2 cup vegetable stock, water, or broth

Rinse your quinoa and add to a pot, bring to a boil with your liquid of choice, and simmer on low 15 min. Allow to rest off heat 5 min and then fluff with a fork. Add to your bowl.
Roughly chop your cucumber and bell pepper and add to your bowl.
Add your tzatziki
Crumble your feta on top and add your mixed nuts
Salt and pepper to taste

You’re done! It’s that easy. This recipe works great for meal prep as well!

Hi! I’m Hannah, I’m 23 years old and just graduated this spring from Laurier with a degree in Biology and Environmental Science. My degree concentration is in Ecology, Biodiversity, and Evolution, my favourite part of my schooling was the field work and hands-on lab components- which I get a lot of on the farm! This is my first summer working at Stardust Gardens, I grew up in the Lambton Shores area and love all things plants, bugs, and animals- I spend a very gracious amount of my work day searching for critters and furry friends around the farm. I love to travel, try new things, and you’ll never guess it, but spending time with wildlife whenever I get the chance.
