Most kettlebell swings break in the first six inches of the backswing.

Hike the bell too low and gravity recruits your lower back to do a job that belongs to your hips.
That's the yank you feel by rep eight.

Three phases of the swing and three jobs:

The Hike — bell swings back into the hip crease, forearms brush the thighs. This is loading. Nothing forceful happens here.

Drive — hips snap forward like you're jumping straight up without leaving the ground. This is where the power actually comes from.

Float — for half a second at chest height, the bell goes weightless. Glutes, abs, quads lock into a hard plank. Nothing moving but a fraction of daylight under your heels.

That's not a pendulum. A pendulum runs on momentum you already gave it. This floats because your hips fired hard enough to send it there.

Very different mechanism, and it's an easy one to fake until you've felt the real version. You don't LIFT the bell, the power your hips create gives the bell momentum and velocity.

It also trains something most people never think about: how fast you can go from stretched to firing.
Every rep runs your hamstrings through a rapid load-then-release, over and over and over again. Lengthen under tension, then snap out of it immediately.
That's the same mechanism sprinting, jumping, and cutting all depend on.

Training that transition here doesn't guarantee it shows up on the field. But you can't sprint or cut well without it, so it's not a bad place to build it.

This is a short crash course I gave my class the other day before their kettlebell circuit:

3 rounds:
30 seconds swing
30 second lunge rows/side
1 minute rest

They crushed it. 🏆

Nothing teaches acceleration like a friend on a hill with intent to beat the breaks off you.

And that's the specific thing we're after here.
Not top speed, not endurance.
Acceleration.

The first few steps out of a stance, the ones that decide whether you get to the ball, the puck, the gap, before someone else does.

That's why it's on a hill and not flat ground.
You physically cannot stand upright and win against an incline, it forces the forward lean, the shin angle, the knee drive that acceleration actually requires.

Flat ground lets kids cheat that with bad habits.
A hill doesn't negotiate.
And we don't run these to exhaustion. Tired legs stop moving the way you trained them to — stride falls apart, hips stop extending, and the body doesn't care if it "feels" maxed out yet.

Train acceleration tired and you're not training acceleration anymore, you're training compensation.

So: warm up properly.
Find your positions. Go hard and fast.
Quality reps, full recovery — until form breaks. Then we stop.

Anyone can make a kid tired. That's the easy part.
Building fast without wrecking the pattern, that's the job.

Behind the scenes: They get after it!

They come straight from work.
Maybe tired, flat, with every excuse in the book.
And they train anyway.

You give them a correction, and they change it that rep.
They are leaders and listeners.

The hard parts they work on outside of the gym:
Sleeping well. Eating like athletes. Building a relationship with food.
Choosing what matters this week.
Nobody claps for you when you go to bed on time.

Nobody gave them any of this.
They built it, and what comes with it goes everywhere they go.

Four weeks into eight.
Proud doesn't even cover it.
You are worth every ounce of effort you put into yourself.
