Outpost is open today, but we want to acknowledge that September 30 is not simply another statutory holiday.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - a day to honour the children who never returned home, Survivors of residential schools, their families and their communities.

As a mother of two young children, it is difficult for me to comprehend the pain experienced by generations of families whose children were taken from them, and the lasting impact that separation has had on families and communities.

As the owner of a business built around the sale of alcohol, I also recognize that our industry intersects with a complicated and painful history in Indigenous communities. Alcohol cannot be separated from the broader history of colonialism, displacement, residential schools and intergenerational trauma in Canada.

Today is a day to listen, to learn and to reflect - and, most importantly, to make space for Indigenous voices and the stories and experiences they choose to share.

If you have some time today, we encourage you to learn more through the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.

The NCTR is a place of learning and dialogue where the truths of the residential school experience will be honoured and kept safe for future generations.

A huge thank you to Bear & Buffalo at the Fort McMurray Golf Club for creating such a beautiful lineup of desserts for our W**e & Dessert Tasting. Each course gave us something completely different to play with, and made for such a fun exploration of how sweetness, acidity, fruit and richness can work together.

We started bright and fresh with Lemon Meringue Tart & Limoncello, followed by Strawberry Shortcake Cheesecake with Borga Manzoni Moscato Sparkling.

From there, we moved into the richer flavours of fall with Maple Pecan Crème Brûlée & Grand Tokaj Late Harvest Sárgamuskotály, before bringing out the chocolate with Chocolate Avalanche Cake, crème anglaise & Caymus-Suisun The Walking Fool.

And to finish? A little nostalgia: Peanut Butter Pie & Quevedo Ruby Port, our grown-up take on the classic PB&J.

Five desserts. Five very different pairings. And a wonderful evening spent exploring why dessert and w**e deserve a little more attention together.
