There has been some mis-information recently about Brute Trash cans and if they are safe to use as fermenters for home w**emaking. Rubbermaid who makes the brute trash cans uses some of the highest standards for their food grade plastic cans. I wouldn't use any other brands cans. Here is a helpful infographic that shows what to look for.

Additionally these apply to plastic buckets as well. Make sure they are stamped with a 2, 4 or 5 on the recycle symbol to know that they are made of plastics that are safe for food contact.

Make sure you clean and sanitize any plastic container before using it as a fermenter. Just like you would do with glass and stainless steel containers as well. Happy w**e making!
