Knuckle Down Farm

Knuckle Down Farm A few little acres of organic vegetables. Knuckle Down Farm is a small-scale organic market garden sitting on a quiet back-channel of the Trent River.

We grow over fifty varieties of vegetables, herbs, and flowers with care and individual attention. Our CSA veggie shares provide fresh, delicious, organic produce all summer while connecting members with the place their food is grown and the farmers who grow it. You can also find us at The Dufferin Grove Organic farmers' market. Farmer Jenny started Knuckle Down Farm in 2012 and moved to Quinte West in 2014. She's occasionally joined by a crew of friends and family.

Summer CSA Starts This Week + Double Rainbow 🌈🌈 KNUCKLE DOWN NEWS

Hello Farm Friends,

Our Summer CSA starts tomorrow and we have so many beautiful veggies for you!

If you are new to the CSA here are a few details you might like to know:

CSA PICK-UP DETAILS
Farm Pick-up time is Tuesday June 16th anytime between 4pm and 7pm or Friday June 19th between 4pm and 7pm, for this week both pick-ups will be at 251 Anderson Island Rd. [Directions in comments] If you can’t make it, please arrange an alternative time with me. Email or text is best because I never have my phone on me in the field. My number is 647-928-5253. Unless you have specified Friday pick-up, we will harvest your veggies on Tuesday!

The CSA set-up is market style so please don’t forget to bring bags or a cooler to carry your vegetables home in. Greens and other loose items will usually be bagged or bunched or divided into pint containers to make everything a little quicker and easier. As always, I recommend washing everything before eating it. Although nothing is sprayed, it did come straight from the field, and although we use water to cool things down nothing is triple-washed like the ready-to-eat greens you find in the grocery store. A little garden dirt can be expected now and again.

I will be near the table to explain everything to new members, so don’t worry if you are unsure!

We’ll continue with our circular driveway technique to help keep traffic going in one direction.

Looking forward to seeing you all, and meeting some new folks too.

Not signed up yet? You still can, but you better hurry!

In the meantime at the farm, thanks to the wild storm that blew through here over the weekend we’ve gone from wilting in the heat on Friday, to bundling up in our extra layers this morning!

If you live in the area I hope you were lucky enough to see the magnificent rainbow that formed as the rain tapered off. I know it won’t do it justice but we tried to take some photos. If I believed in ancient gods I would have been wondering what they were up to, thunder and lighting on one side and and the most peaceful sky on the other.

Thor or Zeus may not have been involved but the rainbow did seem perfectly timed to say Happy Pride to anyone celebrating this month. Love is love, our vegetables don’t discriminate and neither do we.

Sincerely,
— Jenny

KNUCKLE DOWN NEWS
Summer CSA Starts Next Week - You can still signup

Hello Farm Friends,
Everything is coming along nicely so our CSA will be off to a good start next week. Don't worry though it isn't too late to join us! We now have two pick-up options Tuesday on the farm or Friday at the Stirling Market in the Village.

🌞 Sign up for Summer Veggie Shares: https://www.knuckledownfarm.ca/product/farmers-choice-basket/

If you aren't sure you can commit to the whole 20 weeks but would like to try it out. You can order a single share from our Online Farm Store: https://www.knuckledownfarm.ca/product/farmers-choice-basket/

I'll send another email next week with all the pick-up details and a harvest list

Today the farm is enjoying a needed downpour after all the sun and wind that has been drying things up out there. The farmers are enjoying catching-up on some things, including finishing the greenhouse flip from Spring crops to Summer Crops, weeding and then laying out so many drip lines in our nicely weeded beds. Cutting the nasty and unfairly named Canada Thistle out of our Garlic beds, mowing down Spring Cover Crops and a path around the garden and hopefully transplanting a few seedlings that are impatiently waiting to get in the ground! I'm also hoping the ground will be soft enough that I can start pounding some posts in for our pea and tomato trellises

Next week is looking a little cooler so our Peas, Lettuce and Spinach will appreciate that as much as I do. We will have lots of greens to harvest for the Cobourg Farmers' Market on Saturday with extra to spare to send off to the Foodbank, courtesy of our CSA members' generosity.

For those of you who don't know, a percentage of each CSA share goes toward our Community Food Fund which allows us to make our veggies available to folks who might otherwise have difficulty accessing fresh and healthy food. This is done by offering subsidized shares or donating to organizations who can distribute the food to those who need it. If you or someone you know would like to access the fund get in touch.

You can learn more about the Community Food Fund or donate here: https://www.knuckledownfarm.ca/product/community-food-fund-contribution/

Sincerely,
— Jenny

Final Week of the Spring CSA, Summer CSA Starts June 16th
🌱 KNUCKLE DOWN NEWS 🌞
Hello Farm Friends,

June is coming in hawt and we're ready for it. Just look at our hats and sun protective layers! Not only that but the irrigation is rolling out and we're adjusting to earlier rising when needed.

Our final shares for the inaugural Spring CSA are heading out this week. It was a learning experience for us and I hope those of you who took part enjoyed lots of beautiful salads. This week's share includes a new-to-me green called "Sai Sai purple", or "leaf daikon". It can be eaten raw or cooked and it is as pretty as can be, along with the pink radishes, it might make it hard not to take pictures of your food.

Next week we will take one week off of CSA to get on top of our non-harvesting tasks and then it'll be straight into our Summer CSA. We still have a few spots left so let me know before June 16th if you would like to join us for the whole twenty weeks!

For those of you who have signed up but haven't sent a deposit kindly let me know if you still intend to. Folks who would like to pick-up at the Stirling Farmers' Market, for the first week we'll have the pick-up at the Farm, as the Market doesn't start 'till the 26th.

This week was a big week for planting and we have filled every bed that was ready to be filled and some that weren't quite ready. Tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplants, Zucchini the first of the Beans, more Carrots and all of the Storage Onions are in the field and probably hoping for rain.

When it was a bit too humid for us in the field, we caught up on all of our seeding and potted up the rest of our tomatoes in the hopes that we can find homes for some of them! It's not too late if your garden is looking like it has a tomato sized hole in it. You can order yours on the Web store, pop by the Cobourg Market on Saturday morning or just send me an email.

If you know of any community gardens looking for plants send them my way, we definitely don't have room for any more, but they look so nice I'm worried if I keep them here I might be tempted to plant them.

Sincerely,
— Jenny
