As the days grow colder and we near the darker half of the year, it’s this time that we remember to pause and be grateful for all we have. For the harvest. For the land. For the sun and wind. For golden fields and bountiful yields. You cannot love the land without honoring its history. As we watch the crops grow and the sun set over these fields, we recognize that we are farming on the ancestral and unceded territory of Indigenous peoples. We are endlessly thankful for their ancestral wisdom, their enduring care for the earth, and the privilege to grow food here today. We owe our deepest gratitude, as well as to our living sovereign neighbours at Chippewas of the Thames, Oneida Nation of the Thames, Munsee-Delaware, and the Delaware Nation at Moraviantown. True reconciliation requires action, and we promise to protect, heal, and farm this soil with the absolute reverence it deserves…

The Old River Farm will protect the water, soil, pollinators, and wildlife through the cultivation of broad-acre permaculture guilds, tall prairie grass, switch grass, cow pasture, and agro-forestry and sloped lands. We have almost 90 acres of river and creek sloped forests that are the last filter prior to Newbiggin Creek entering the Thames River.

We have a responsibility to wisely implement best management practices, pushing the envelope to introduce progressive designs and best management practices, working with people who share a regenerative vision of agriculture. We want our friends, family, and community to enjoy the Old River Farm. Regenerating the Old River Farm will enhance the health of the people who spend time there. This honours the legacy of Stew and his desire that the Old River Farm be a place of healing and demonstration.

A stop along the way for the Monarch Butterfly completing their fall migration. During the fall migration, monarchs cover thousands of miles, with a corresponding multigenerational return north in spring. The butterflies that fly to Mexico have never been there before, yet they somehow find the exact overwintering sites used by their great-grandparents. Due to many threats, such as the loss of milkweed and pesticides, the monarchs are listed as an endangered species in Canada. Every little bit helps and this is part of our mission here at Old River Farm so we can see this beautiful species make a comeback!
