Here are a few simple tips to keep your Christmas tree happy, hydrated, and looking beautiful all season long:
🌲 Do the “Shake-Out”
Before bringing your tree inside, give it a shake—and even a gentle bounce of the trunk on the ground—to dislodge any loose needles.
✨ Give it a quick trim (if needed!)
If you didn’t set your tree up right after bringing it home from the farm, trim about ½–1 inch off the bottom of the trunk before placing it in the stand. This refreshes the cut and helps reopen the tree’s vascular system so it can drink water more easily.
💧 Water, water, water!
Plain tap water is all your tree needs. No additives required!
Fresh trees are especially thirsty in the first couple of days and can drink several litres of water as they adjust to life indoors. After that, they slow down—but be sure to keep the stand topped up and never let it run dry.
❄️ Keep it cool
Placing your tree in a slightly cooler area of your home helps it stay fresh longer. Avoiding heat sources (like fireplaces or vents) keeps it from drying out and losing that wonderful balsam fir smell.
These care tips will go a long way in helping your tree stay fresh and minimize needle drop. Still, it’s helpful to remember that needle drop is a natural and complex physiological process influenced by many factors—including how trees adjust to colder weather, genetics, nutrition, moisture levels, light, temperature, and plant hormones. Every tree is a little different!
