Ashwagandha & Mental Health
Because of its versatility and efficacy, ashwagandha is emerging as a mental

A just published meta-analysis of 22 controlled studies of 1391 adults shows that
ashwagandha significantly reduces stress, anxiety and depression.
The great herb also seems to help the people who need it most. The results
suggested that ashwagandha’s benefit is felt most in people who actually have a
clinical diagnosis.

Eradicating H. Pylori with a
Probiotic
H. pylori is the most important cause of peptic ulcers. The conventional approach
to eradicating it has proven problematic. A natural supplement may provide the
answer.
In 2005, a Nobel Prize was awarded for the discovery that the H. pylori bacterium
plays a major role in causing peptic ulcers. It is now recognized as the single
most important cause of peptic ulcers and stomach cancer.
Troublingly, the conventional approach to ulcers often includes acid blocking
drugs that actually allow the growth of H. pylori. So, the symptoms are
suppressed but the ulcer progresses. Often, antibiotics are added. But they have
many side effects, and H. pylori is becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics
with up to 22.2% resistance to clarithromycin and 69.2% to metronidazole.
The encouraging news is that several studies show that adding probiotics
significantly improves eradication (J Nutr. 2007 Mar;137(3Suppl 2):812S-

Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast. A new meta-analysis has looked at
the potential of adding S. boulardii to conventional therapy.
The meta-analysis included 16 studies with 3087 people all of whom were
receiving conventional treatment, but some of them also took S. boulardii.
The results showed that adding S. boulardii significantly increased the
eradication of H. pylori. The most effective dose seemed to be 500mg a day.
And there was still more advantage to taking S. boulardii. Adding the probiotic
significantly decreased the side effects of conventional therapy, including
diarrhea, epigastric pain, and nausea.

This study suggests that adding the probiotic yeast Saccharomyces boulardii to
conventional therapy increases the eradication of H. pylori with the bonus of
decreasing the side effects of conventional treatment.

Promising New Herbal Help for
Kids with ADHD
ADHD is surprisingly common, and it can be very disruptive to your child’s life. A
just published study has discovered promising new herbal help.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder
that typically starts in childhood. Kids with ADHD struggle with inattention,
hyperactivity and impulsivity. It can make school difficult and make social and
family life challenging.
Amazingly, 7-8% of children aged 3-12 and 5-6% of adolescents have ADHD.
That’s a lot of kids potentially on a lot of medication. A safe, natural alternative
would be very welcome.
There is tons of research on the herb ashwagandha for adults, including for
stress, anxiety insomnia and more. But there has not yet been a lot of research
on ashwagandha for kids, including kids with ADHD. This new study set out to
address that.
The double-blind study included 58 children between the ages of 6 and 12 who
had mild ADHD. Half of the kids were given a placebo; half were given 150mg of
ashwagandha root extract standardized to approximately 5% withanolides twice
a day. The study lasted for 8 weeks.
Ashwagandha’s results were impressive. On the ADHD Rating Scale, scores for
inattention failed to improve at all on placebo while they improved significantly on
ashwagandha. The difference between the results was significant. The same was
true for scores of hyperactivity. Scores improved only in the ashwagandha group
and were significant. Total ADHD scores were significantly more improved in the
ashwagandha group.
Next the researchers looked at the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive
Function-2 (BRIEF-2) scale. Many of the behavioural features of ADHD, including
inattention, impulsiveness, memory deficits and difficulty at school are related to
executive function. They found that behaviour regulation improved only in the
ashwagandha group and that the difference was significant. Emotion regulation

also improved significantly in the ashwagandha group and not at all on the
placebo, and, once again, the difference was significant.
Finally, sleep disturbances and anxiety both improved significantly more with
ashwagandha. On the PROMIS scale total score, which, in addition to sleep and
anxiety, includes quality of life, improvement with ashwagandha was significantly
better.
Importantly when considering treatments for children, the ashwagandha was
safe. The ashwagandha was as safe as the placebo: there were no clinically
relevant hematological or biochemical changes or changes in laboratory markers,
including liver, renal, hematological, and lipid status.
This study shows that ashwagandha safely and significantly improves ADHD
symptoms, executive function, sleep, anxiety and quality of life in children with
mild ADHD.

Black Seed Could Provide
Cardiovascular Benefits to
Diabetic and Overweight People.
If you are diabetic or overweight, black seed could help you to prevent
cardiovascular disease.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world. Type 2

This meta-analysis of 31 controlled studies included 2,145 people who have type
2 diabetes or who are overweight.
Black seed did not help everything. But it helped a lot!
It did not help waist circumference, insulin or insulin resistance. But it helped
everything else.
When it came to helping obesity, black seed significantly reduced weight and
body mass index.
When it came to diabetes, it significantly decreased fasting blood sugar and
HbA1c. That black seed can help HbA1c is of special importance because
HbA1c is the most important marker of long term blood sugar and diabetes
control. Every 1% drop in HbA1c reduces the risk of the cardiovascular
complications of diabetes by 37%.
When it came to blood pressure, black seed significantly reduced both systolic
and diastolic blood pressure.

These results show that black seed modestly, but significantly, improves a variety
of risk factors for cardiovascular disease in people who are at higher risk
because they are diabetic or overweight, including weight, BMI, blood sugar,
long-term glucose control and blood pressure. So, black seed could be an
important addition to an overall lifestyle and supplement program for preventing
cardiovascular disease.
