Starting seeds doesn’t have to be expensive!

That’s one of the lies we’re often sold. While there is a lot of fancy and costly seed starting setups available, they are not necessary. Here I reused soil I had available from last season (not the best mix for blocking, but I made it work), a soil blocker that will last me many years and a recycled container to start several varieties of basil. If you don’t have access to a soil blocker, egg cartons or small yogurt containers will easily do!

Have you ever grown your own dahlia seedlings? This will be my fourth year! It’s exciting to see new hybrid dahlia cultivars - many are just okay or lack lustre, but there are always a few gems. This year one growing 22 of my own seedlings from 2022 seed and about a dozen from an acquaintance from her garden in the Interior of British Columbia. I’ll keep you posted on how they do, but we’re off to a great start!

Disclaimer: Do not start dahlia seedlings this early if you don’t have a greenhouse and lighting to support their growth. If I didn’t have access to these things, I would start my seedlings in March for the South Coast British Columbia growing season and late April for Nova Scotia.

Little Miss Salt had a bit too much fun on her walk today and ended up needing a bath - she’s clearly not a fan. 😂 My pups typically do a good job of keeping themselves clean, so her and Buoy don’t get full baths often. This photo was too cute not to share!

When in Rome!

One of my big projects for next year is growing the flowers for my sister’s wedding! They don’t include dahlias as it’s a spring wedding, but so far the fall planted ranunculus are doing great! 🤞 I can’t say that I’ve ever grown 500 of these at a time before and have never fall planted them, so it’s been a fun ride!

We're in the slow process of moving west, so it's time for a name change! For the next year we will be continuing our small scale farming on both coasts, but I thought it would be good to make a note here to keep everyone posted!

It’s that time of year! Drove 3/4 of my tubers safely over from Nova Scotia to British Columbia - it was a trip! This weekend I divided and stored them, so they’re now tucked away for the short British Columbian winter months.
