🧡National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡
September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

This day is an opportunity to remember the children who were taken from their families and communities and sent to residential schools, to honour Survivors, and to recognize the families and communities who continue to live with the impacts of the residential school system.

Residential schools were part of a system designed to separate Indigenous children from their families and communities and to suppress their languages, cultures, identities, and ways of life. The harm caused by this system did not end when the schools closed. Its impacts continue to be felt across generations today.
September 30 also marks Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led movement inspired by residential school Survivor Phyllis Webstad, whose story of having her orange shirt taken away when she arrived at residential school has become a powerful symbol of the message “Every Child Matters.”

Truth and Reconciliation is about more than wearing orange for one day. It is about remembering, listening, learning, and acknowledging the truth of what happened. It is also about recognizing the strength and resilience of Survivors, families, and Indigenous communities, and considering what we can do to build stronger relationships and a better future.

On September 30, we encourage everyone to take some time to learn, reflect, listen to Survivors and Indigenous voices, and participate in local events and gatherings.
We remember the children who never came home.
We honour the Survivors.
We remember their families and communities.
We carry their stories forward.
Every Child Matters. 🧡

Love Gord Downie? Did you know…

Inspired by Chanie’s story and Gord’s call to build a better Canada, the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF) aims to build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

CHANIE WENJACK
Chanie Wenjack, misnamed Charlie Wenjack by his teachers, was an Anishinaabe boy born in Ogoki Post on the Marten Falls Reserve on January 19, 1954. Chanie’s story, tragically, is like so many stories of Indigenous children in this country; he fell victim to Canada’s colonization of Indigenous Peoples.

In 1963, at the age of nine, Chanie was sent to the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential school in Kenora, Ontario. In 1966, at 12 years old, Chanie ran away from the residential school, attempting to reunite with his family, who were 600 kilometres away in Ogoki Post. Nine others ran away that same day; all but Chanie were caught within 24 hours.

Chanie’s body was found beside the railway tracks on October 22, 1966, a week after he fled. He succumbed to starvation and exposure. In his pocket was nothing but a little glass jar with seven wooden matches. His death sparked the first inquest into the treatment of Indigenous children in the residential school system, and years later, inspired Gord Downie’s album, Secret Path.

Truth and Reconciliation Day. A time to learn and connect as a community. Sometimes it’s hard to hear or imagine this was reality but the truth isn’t always easy. We cannot erase the past, but we can come together now to understand each other and work to build a community of allyship. I will be sharing a number of resources today to support awareness. 🧡
