🫐 Word of the Week: Winter-Kill

Every week we’re sharing a word that helps explain the science behind Nova Scotia wild blueberry production.

Winter-kill refers to damage that can occur when wild blueberry plants are exposed to extreme winter conditions. Plants can be especially vulnerable when very low temperatures combine with strong winds, which can damage exposed stems.

Signs of winter-kill may include blackened or dead stems that didn’t survive the winter.

A good blanket of snow can help protect plants by insulating them from harsh temperatures and wind. ❄️🌿

🫐 What Makes a Wild Blueberry Wild?

Wild blueberries aren’t planted like most crops — they grow naturally and have adapted over thousands of years to thrive where they are.

Here’s what makes them wild:
• They grow naturally in the landscape, not in rows
• They spread through underground stems (rhizomes)
• They thrive in acidic soils where other crops struggle
• They’re smaller, with a more concentrated flavour and colour
• They’re managed and cared for, not planted every year

In Nova Scotia, wild blueberries are shaped by our soils, climate, and generations of grower knowledge — making them truly unique from field to freezer. 🌿❄️

We are truly overwhelmed with gratitude as we close our Hurricane Melissa relief fundraiser. Thanks to the incredible generosity, we were able to raise $30,000 for our Jamaican workers and their families, along with two large bins of essential supplies now on their way to Jamaica to support those in need.

All donations and contributions will go directly toward helping our workers and their loved ones rebuild, recover, and meet essential needs during this challenging time.

A heartfelt thank you to our top contributors, High Country Mechanical and Truro Agromart Ltd., for their exceptional support.

And to everyone who donated, shared our posts, or dropped off supplies—thank you. Your kindness has made a meaningful impact, and we’re incredibly grateful to be part of such a supportive community. 🇯🇲💚

For nearly 20 years, Millen Farms has had the privilege of working alongside Jamaican men and women who travel to our farm each season to support their families back home. They help us grow and harvest the food that feeds our communities near and far.

Recently, Hurricane Melissa devastated parts of Jamaica, leaving many of our workers’ homes and communities severely damaged. Families have lost roofs, belongings, and in some cases, the ability to meet even their most basic needs.

We at Millen Farms are committed to helping them rebuild. Our farm will be donating a considerable amount directly to our Jamaican workers and their families, and we’re asking for your help to expand that impact by visiting our Go Fund Me page link below to donate:

https://gofund.me/66294af0b

Every dollar raised will go directly to our workers and will be divided among them to provide immediate relief and support for recovery efforts back home.

If you are unable to donate, please help by sharing this to spread the word — every share will truly make a difference.

Physical Donations Also Accepted!
In addition to financial support, we are accepting donations of essential supplies to send to our workers and their families in Jamaica. Items needed include:
* Flashlights & batteries
* Lanterns & ropes
* Tarps & buckets with lids
* Collapsible water storage containers
* Soap, hygiene kits & first aid kits
* Heavy-duty garbage bags & gloves
* Fuel containers, tools & shovels
* Bottled water, diapers & infant formula
* And many more items
Drop-off location: Millen Farms (80 Little D**e Road, Great Village, NS)
Donation hours: Daily from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM
Final collection date: November 24

Our Jamaican workers give so much of themselves each season to help sustain our farm, our local economy, and the food supply we all rely on. Now, it’s our turn to give back to them in their time of need.

Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support!
