My resting garlic plot seeded with oriental mustard seed is loving today’s rain! I plan to till in the mustard when it flowers to act as a green manure and a biofumigation for next years garlic crop. Been hand weeding the garlic field for the last few weeks, only 1 more row to go! 💪🏻🌱. Those weeds are almost catching up to the garlic height. 🙈

The garlic was so excited for 2” of rain! Its definitely standing taller today! But when the garlic rejoices for moisture so does the weeds… 🙈. Time to start hand weeding.

The slow cool spring sure slowed the growth of the garlic. Its finally 6” tall which is the height I usually start fertilizing. Every 2 weeks we will do a fish foiler spray until the scapes emerge. Its also been a dry spring so its time to start watering. We are in sandy soil so we are aiming for 2” of water a week. If you have more clay based soil, aim for 1” per week. Happy growing! 🌱🧄.

On Sunday it was National garlic day but I missed posting it as I was sitting on a beach taking in 4 days of relaxing before the hard work begins! Came home Tuesday to find a little sprout of garlic life! Now we will begin to hand rake the thick layer of stover cover to help warm up the ground.

My sister in Calgary planted our garlic last fall. Looks like springtime is well on its way in south Alberta! We probably have 3 weeks till we see life poking up in southeast Manitoba.
