SOIL geeking ⚠️

Cover crops and animal grazing is how we build our soil which has gone from dust to sweet smelling, structured, dark live ecosystem in just a few years.

We just got 2 tons of organic chicken feed delivered. We get our feed custom blended for our flock life stages and seasonal needs. The ingredients are always fresh and there are no biproducts or pesticide/ herbicide residues. Commercial feed is really quite terrible. If you gag when opening a bag of feed, you know that you shouldn't feed that to your animals.
Our laying hens are by far the farm's most heavy input endeavor. They'll go through this feed in less than 3 months.
And in a world of changing climate and uncertainty, animal feed is expensive...especially if organic. Living in a remote valley means that we are adding another 30% to that cost just in shipping.
Sadly, we don't have the land mass and infrastructure capacity to grow food for them. The feed conundrum is one of the biggest question that I keep pondering.

Emancipation day for Georgette. I've captured and relocated her to the coop over a dozen times. She'll climb on the roof each time where she can soar across the electric fence. I've seen her awkwardly run in deep snow back to her shack where there's no longer food or water. All of her sisters are happily living in the large coop with unlimited water, straw, feed, roosts and protection from predators.

Today, I give up. You do you, Georgette. Best of luck being a wild chicken.
