🌿✨ July 4th at Abbey Gardens | Tea with Steve! ✨🍵

Join us for a slow, sensory summer experience on the beautiful grounds of Abbey Gardens in Haliburton.

We’ll begin with a guided plant identification walk, learning how to recognize wild and wonderful edible plants growing all around us 🌱

Then we’ll gather ingredients and transform them into a freshly foraged tea, curated and served on the porch.

To close the afternoon, we’ll share a relaxed farm-to-table lunch in community 🧺✨—good food, good company, and time to simply enjoy the land.

Salamanders are small but mighty creatures that give us valuable insight into the health of our forests and the changes happening within these ecosystems over time. Every observation helps support long-term biodiversity monitoring and conservation efforts. 🦎💚

"🌿 National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada is June 21 🌿

This day is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Canada.
At the heart of our nature-based programming, on this day and every day of the year, is a deep respect for values Indigenous communities have long practiced and shared: connection to the land, learning through nature, stewardship of the earth, reciprocity, gratitude, community, and the understanding that people are part of nature, not separate from it.

We believe some of the most meaningful learning happens outdoors:
🍃 Listening to the wind in the trees
🐾 Following animal tracks
🌎 Caring for the ecosystems around us
💧 Understanding that healthy land and water sustain all living things

As we continue to inspire curiosity, meaningful connection with the natural world, and environmental stewardship, we acknowledge the importance of land-based knowledge and honour the generations of Indigenous Peoples who have cared for, and continue to care for, these lands.

National Indigenous Peoples Day, and every day, is an opportunity to listen, learn, reflect, and strengthen our commitment to respect, relationship, responsibility, and care for the earth and one another. 💚

🎸😄 Today's surprise: Feisty Flapjack and Carl Dixon hit it off! Is it gratitude for the upcoming fundraiser at Abbey Gardens, or a well-planned charm offensive? 🤔🐾

Perhaps he's genuinely grateful for Carl's fundraising concert on July 4th—or perhaps he's discovered that good behaviour is easier when rock stars are around. ⭐🎶😇

It’s almost time to give our native plants a little “Chelsea chop” ✂️🌿 — a late spring haircut that keeps them shorter, bushier, and packed with blooms later in the season. Just trim back about 1/3 of the plant with clean shears to help prevent floppy stems, support pollinators longer, and keep the garden looking full and fabulous all summer! Plants are ready for the chop when they’re vigorously growing but have no visible buds yet. Native plants well-suited for a garden glow-up include:
• Asters
• Goldenrods
• Coneflowers
• Beebalm/Bergamot
• Milkweeds
• And more 🌿

Your support helps make this work possible. 💚🌱

What’s on your child’s summer bucket list this year?
How about unplugging for the day and diving into nature adventures? What’s better than chasing bugs, searching for animal tracks, discovering tiny critters, breathing fresh air, and yes… getting a little dirty while making new friends and unforgettable memories! 🐞🌿🐾
