Saturday Oct 2nd was a really really special day.
Talking with folks at the market booth was such a delight. One young person who I’ve watched grow up from their first even spoke full sentence to me “Mommy was making a PieceMeal last night”
What a privilege to serve this community of people who fully engage with this food and appreciate the love I pour into the company. It’s re-invigorating to hear them gush about how delicious the recipes are and how the kits help balance meal time duties in their household.
Owning a business is not for the faint of heart and if I could give any advice it would be this: focus on your customers first and they will keep you in the game. Even when you’re exhausted, even when you’re spent, even when you’re not sure how to make it all work. You’ll do it for them.

Since World WarII globalization has offered some incredible technologies to offer preservation and access to multitudes of food from every corner of the earth, year round.

For those of us born into this type of system it’s easy to forget that it hasn’t always been this way…

Our modern food system may offer cheap options but these often come at a hidden cost. Cheap wage labour (prison labour, human trafficking), environmental degradation, nutritional voids. These are some of the impacts we collectively face in the wake of for-profit cheap food.

The North American food system was built on a bloody and brutal history. Monocropping soy and wheat to use as fillers for processed foods keeps us sick.

The “buy local” movement has since become something out of reach for many people working to feed their families. Having to skip whole foods in favour of processed cheap carbohydrates means missing out on the nutritional density the earth offers when we can eat what the seasons provide.

Highly processed foods keep us sick and tired and depressed.

Eating local and in season is not a new thing. We don’t have to invent more technologies to eat food… we just have to remember how we did it before.

🍲Why am I so obsessed with where our food comes from?

Lately, while seeding lettuces for the winter greenhouse I’ve been listening to “Outlaw Ocean” a podcast all about the dark underbelly of ocean industry and migration.

Since I started learning about how our food is grown, processed, and packaged, I can’t look away.

Am I perfect at eating sustainably? Hell noooo...but I do try to make food choices based on the knowledge that my food dollars go toward the kind of world I want to live in. A world where people are paid a fair wage for growing/harvesting my food, a world where the animals raised are treated with compassion, a world where the soil my food is grown in is filled with nutrition rather than herbicides.

PieceMeal is a small part of making it easier and more accessible to eat in a way that gives back rather than simply extracts.

Hey! I’m PieceMeal. Well, technically I am not PieceMeal, but I built this business on my lived principles so in a way we are one and the same.
I operate out of the Annapolis Valley and I want people to know a little more about what PieceMeal is.
First:
Piecemeal is a meal kit that helps you eat local every single week
PieceMeal is a business that operates out of the valley and cares about the rivers and lakes and streams
It supports local community events with food that’s made fresh and local
It sources from farms I work closely with. I even work on a farm 3 days a week to learn more about growing food without the harmful overuse of pesticides.
I care about the food I eat and the food you eat and how it all affects how we live.
I think our food system could be better, which is why I started this business.
I believe in the right to access nutritious food and want this for folks that struggle to access it because of cost, education or place.
The solution is simple. But it’s a lot of hard work.

Thank you so much for being diligent with jar returns this week! With more kits to prepare, I was wondering if we would have enough!
When I order jars for delivery, shipping alone is around $100.
When I order through Richard’s Packaging in Dartmouth, they require I pick up by 4pm on a weekday (hmm I work in the Valley)
If I were to go to the more affordable company to make an order their minimum is $500 (!!)
So, the simplest, most cost effective solution is to return these jars each week, leaving more budget for those fresh veggies!
