1. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮?
My name’s James Freeman. My favorite thing about me is I like to make people smile.

2. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐨?
I was just walking down the street and someone was actually carrying a cup of your coffee. I had a sip of it and felt warm and fuzzy. That same feeling I used to chase back in the day before I got clean. I was having a rough week but the minute I had that coffee, it seemed like everything just fit and my whole day was better. I haven’t had a bad day since, I don't know if that's because of your coffee or if it's just the mindset that it gives me for the day.

My favorite thing is the personability that's behind the counter, the caring is what struck me. You’re not just another face here and everyone genuinely gives a s**t.

3. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐚𝐱?
There are places you can get resources but there's no community in it. Sure enough, they hand out food but everyone just shuffles in and shuffles out. Here you’re seen and asked how your day is going and vice versa. It's just that little bit that people need sometimes, you know what I mean?

4. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞?
Halifax is, is the bomb. I'm from BC and when I landed in Halifax, I felt community. Even on the streets there’s a sense of family. I have the abilities to not be where I'm at but some of these people here don't. That's why I try and do what I can for the area. Every check I get, I come in and spend some money on tokens for people. 'cause I know my friends rely on that for their food.

If you’ve been to Upward Café, you’ve likely been welcomed by Kumud. She’s the heart at our counter on Gottingen.

Born in Halifax and raised in Dartmouth, Kumud has spent her life caring for people in one way or another, from food and beverage to making dentures (yes, really). When she started volunteering with Upward, she was often one of the first to arrive, making sure the kids in the school lunch program were fed and ready for the day. That same quiet dedication is what she now brings to Upward Café at The Nook, where she wears many hats, all in service to the community she loves most.

When she’s not at work, she’s likely renovating her home, or running an incredible music label she co-owns with her partner in life, and crime, Black Buffalo Records ()

For her, the best part of the job is being kind to everyone, and getting that kindness back. In her own words “I wanted to be part of something special and soul providing. This is it."

Everything about this sandwich is made locally by people who care about feeding our neighbors.

Smokey Brothers bacon that cuts through whipped chive cream cheese, with just a hint of spice from that fresh cracked black pepper, and a warm MTL style everything bagel from across the bridge.

Fog sits low over Halifax this morning, quiet, damp. You step into the café, hear the grinder kick in, smell that first batch of coffee and it cuts through the chill.

We take our coffee as serious as we take our culinary and having one of the best baristas in the HRM lead our program makes sure every pour and steam, is perfect, and that coffee is for everyone

We’re super proud to share that ritual with our friends at , roasted up in Berwick, NS. They sponsor a free cup with every token redeemed, and we’re grateful to call them partners.

And if you want to take it home, we'll happily grind a bag of beans for your first sip of the day.

I guess my obsession with photography and capturing the mundane and telling stories through images.

This organization has been inspiring to me to also try to find ways through my passion to be more involved in our community.

You know when you’re eating the best pasta you’ve had in a while, with some fresh aromatic basil and that sweet yet savory tomato sugo. Then when you get to the end of the plate you wish you just had a piece of bread to scoop up all that left over sauce? THIS is that bread.

This focaccia has been put through tests and trials to find the perfect mixture of crisp, salt and softness to be the base of many of our sandwiches.

I'm Alexa Cude and my favourite thing about myself is my focus on finding beauty in the everyday, a skill I practiced through my work as a photographer

I live in the neighborhood and was a regular at The Nook in its early days. It's really cool to see how Upward has given this business a second lease on life. I love Upward's commitment to making affordable food accessible and healthy, it's something we need more of

One thing I really appreciate about Upward is the sense of community. The staff are super friendly, the pace never feels rushed and I've had countless good conversations there with the Upward team and customers alike. The atmosphere feels like the small businesses I remember from years ago, which I find rarer and rarer with the rapid development happening across the HRM and especially in the North End
