Today is World Day of Prayer for Creation. We offer this prayer for water adapted from the Season of Creation Celebration Guide.

Almighty and ever living God, we thank you for your love in all creation, and especially for your gift of water to sustain and cleanse all life. Christ is the living water, cleansing, refreshing, and making all things new. So now we offer our thanks for the waters that bring beauty to all that we enjoy, the wild places, the bush, the mountains, coast and the sea. We give thanks and praise for all good lands, for the trees and pastures, for our plentiful crops, and for the living water that quenches them.

God of living waters, today we pray for a wounded world where waters are exploited, polluted, and withheld. We pray for places where plastics, toxins, and oil spills blacken creeks and wetlands, for communities whose fishing waters are contaminated and whose children drink from polluted streams. Heal what has been poisoned. Bring justice where profit has silenced truth.

We pray for all rivers dammed without the consent of the vulnerable; for farmers whose soil dries seasonal flood; for indigenous peoples whose sacred waters are engineered for distant cities and data centers; for the suffering of communities whose livelihoods are stolen by corporate greed, and whose health is sacrificed for global consumption. Free what has been unjustly controlled. Let rivers flow again with dignity and life.

God, whose Spirit moved over the deep: we thank you for the gift of water. Where water flows, Lord, let everything live, trees for food and leaves for healing.

This is the final week in our series on A Rocha Canada's strategic priorities: Igniting Creation Care in Churches.

We believe that caring for God’s earth is an important part of Christian mission and discipleship. Churches then are key places where creation care could happen. We regularly speak, teach workshops, and consult with churches about how they can integrate creation care into their regular rhythms and practice using the head, heart, hands model.

We would love to hear your church’s story and help you integrate some new creation care practices. Or if you want to bring your church youth group, seniors group, or small group for a day of learning and connecting with God in nature at our centre, we would be so excited to host you. Reach out to us at [email protected]

Today, as we continue our series on our three strategic priorities, we are highlighting Equipping Tomorrow’s Earthkeepers.

A Rocha Canada in Ontario is well-known for our work with kids and youth - we love helping young people not only spend time in nature but learn that they can be active participants in caring for the earth. As kids (and adults) grow in their knowledge of the places they call home and build a sense of kinship with the creatures outside their door, they grow in our desire to protect it. Young people emerge from our programs able to identify birds, empathize with snails, and know how their daily choices make a difference for the planet.

This fall we are offering field trips for school and homeschool groups as well as PD Day camps for kids.

The housing crisis and habitat conservation debate often gets treated as separate conversations, or worse, as a zero-sum fight.

In this webinar hosted by think-tank Cardus, leading experts on Canadian housing policy will explore possibilities at the intersection of balancing family-friendly housing and the conservation of greenbelts and farmland.

They will draw on recent debates in Hamilton and discuss how win-win solutions through thoughtful policies are possible.

Webinar: (Bird)Houses and Greenbelts: Can We Build Family-Friendly Housing While Protecting Ontario's Environment?
Date: August 25, 2026
Time: 12:00pm - 1:00pm ET

As we look ahead to this next season, one thing that hasn’t changed is our three strategic priorities: Nurturing Biodiversity, Equipping Tomorrow’s Earthkeepers, and Igniting Creation Care in Churches.

This week we are highlighting Nurturing Biodiversity.

There are many ways to care for creation, including education, advocacy, reducing consumption, and using green energy. At A Rocha, we care about all of these, but our focus is on nurturing, preserving, and restoring biodiversity.

In Ontario, that means caring for threatened and at risk species (especially birds!) and planting diverse native plant communities to support ecosystem biodiversity. Each creature is inherently valuable, uniquely created by God. Nationally and internationally, A Rocha organizations are protecting threatened species, sometimes those that are small, strange, or underappreciated.

Refugia is a biological term for places in nature where life finds shelter, recovers, and flourishes. But we need refugia-like places for people too. A Rocha’s vision is for a hope-filled future where communities flourish as people and nature thrive together.

So when we think about refugia for people, we imagine spaces where people can step away from the busyness of ordinary life and reconnect with God and with the land. We need to learn to listen, to find healing in our relationships with self, others, God, and creation.

In this next season of work in Ontario we believe that this land we are stewarding is one place we can do that. If you are interested in a sabbath walk, a facilitated prayer time in nature, or a hands-on workshop for your church or youth group, we would love to host you!

We would love to help you learn to listen in your places too. Contact us at [email protected] to arrange a workshop or gathering at your church, school, or business!

Our Spade the Phrag event is coming up on August 8!

You’ve heard of Phragmites. You see it growing in the ditches and roadsides. An invasive wetland grass that grows up to 5 metres tall, it aggressively destroys local ecosystems by forming dense monocultures, depleting water levels, and releasing toxins that kill surrounding plants.

August 8 is your opportunity to learn more about how invasive Phragmites is managed and take part in a morning of spading - digging it out to reduce its spread through the wetland at the Ontario Centre and make room for beneficial native plant communities.

As we look forward to this next season of A Rocha’s work in Ontario, one word has stood out that captures our vision: refugia.

In nature, refugia are places where life finds shelter, recovers, and flourishes, particularly in times of crisis. Not many would argue that we are living in an age of ecological crisis today - climate change, biodiversity loss, and plastic pollution are common knowledge. But they aren’t the end of the story.

We believe that God is nurturing refugia, places of hope and healing, in the midst of it.

At our centre in Ontario we are actively nurturing such a place through our conservation efforts for the Bobolink (a threatened grassland bird species) and other declining bird species. Our habitat restoration efforts also nurture biodiversity, giving life a chance to flourish.

We love to help those in our community nurture refugia at their places, too, through Project NEST, consultations, workshops, or hands-on support. We believe that your school, church, or home can also be a place where life flourishes and multiplies.
