it has been a very busy, full on spring for us, on & off the land. this time of year is always a flurry of activity, our own happenings & also the land coming alive ..from frog eggs & bird song, to planting seeds & tending gardens & transitioning all the sleeping trees, plants, tubers & seeds from our hands and soil to their new homes.

thanks to everyone who has & continues to support us. we have met so many lovely, interesting & resilient humans through our work with plants. and it also allows us to continue our simple way off life, living on the land, for which we are forever grateful.

every spring when our ambitions are heightened & anything feels possible, we always mull over the idea of having farm tours, garden parties & workshops here on the land. but then the seasons tend to run away with us & life's flurry overtakes us like waves erasing sandcastles on the beach. but let us continue to dream of ways of sharing what are working on here at the hollow. we want to show you our ever burgeoning & budding food forest & gardens. .. it truly is a marvel what a whole heckuva lotta work & intention can do, from a clearcut littered with brush piles to gardens that continue to feed us more & more every year, plants that we propagate from, medicine that nourishes us & community, beauty that humbles us, troubles that frustrate us (drought, pests, porcupines, the list goes on but we try our best to pivot & evolve).

to growing many, many more trees, saving many more seeds, growing so much more food & medicine to share so that you too can have gardens that bloom & berry & feed the pollinators & insects & animals too.

blessed beltane. may our eyes, ears & hearts be open to new ways & worlds & commitments to preserving what is good & green in this beautiful world.

𝚙𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚝𝚛𝚎𝚎 𝚜𝚎𝚎𝚍𝚜. .. spring has been slow but the tree seeds are more than ready to be planted. today we planted shiro plums & lots of nut seeds 🌱. hard to believe these lil leggy guys will someday become big, resilient trees. they say the best time to plant a tree was 30 years ago, but it's never too late.

𝚙𝚎𝚛𝚎𝚗𝚗𝚒𝚊𝚕 𝚏𝚘𝚘𝚍 𝚌𝚛𝚘𝚙𝚜. .. lazy gardening as we sometimes like to call it. apocalypse food (okay, just the perennial artichokes ha). perennial foods are the land based equivalent to food in the bank. most of these seen pictured here over-winter fine outside (as we have learned through forgetting to dig them or escapees).

they are diverse! some are slightly sweet, some a bit nutty, all of them are edible & generally quite hardy. oca we do put row cover on at the end of the season if we are growing them outside, as the tubers are sizing up as the frosts start to come.

we love perennial food crops! most of these we grow like potatoes (except the jerusalem artichokes), dig them in the fall & eat them & save some to replant.

they're a nice addition to your gardens, something new & fun to play around with in the kitchen & generally quite tasty.

🌱 𝚜𝚙𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚝𝚛𝚎𝚎𝚜 𝚊𝚛𝚎 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚍𝚢! it's happening folks, the ground is starting to thaw & we are looking at warmer temperatures & rain in the forecast off & on all week.

time to pickup your trees! we have just started mailing orders out & more will be going out every day now as we get things moving.

haven't ordered trees yet? that's okay! we still have a pretty great selection left.

though it may feel like the ground is still waking up, this is truly a great time to plant trees. the saplings are still dormant, which means if you can get them in the ground & all tucked in now, they will wake up in their new home & have ample time to establish themselves a bit before a potentially (i sure hope not) hot, dry summer.

it also feels like a poignant time to point out that it doesn't look like our food security is going to get much better out there, if you haven't already invested into perennial foods & more land based sustenance, maybe now is the time to do it.

𝚌𝚞𝚝𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜. .. this is a great time of year to order yourself some cuttings! it's an easy way to propagate & grow some of our favourite plants (elderberry, currants, willow, etc).

while some plants are easy to start by seed, or by root divisions, there are quite a few resilient & tenacious plants that are quite easy to propagate by cuttings.

it can be an economical & affordable way to start out if you are looking to start a patch of something or a hedgerow. our cuttings sell in bundles of 12-20 for $15 (12 for cultivars, 20 for regular).

cuttings ensure that the plant you grow out is identical to the parent plant. a plant grown out from a cutting will mature faster than starting it from seed.

right now, cuttings can be stored in a ziploc bag with some moist fabric or paper towel in the fridge, until the ground thaws. then you simply have to push them in, wherever you want to plant them, or you can start them in pots if you want to keep a closer eye on them (just making sure they stay damp & don't dry out, a problem we generally don't have outside in the spring if they're planted in a garden bed).

some plants will root in water, but to our knowledge they will develop a better root system when planted in soil.

𝚊𝚛𝚎 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚙𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚗𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚢𝚘𝚞𝚛 𝚐𝚊𝚛𝚍𝚎𝚗𝚜 𝚢𝚎𝚝? i'm dreaming of fresh herb muddled lemonade & sun-kissed berries staining my palms. fresh picked salad for lunch every day & peaches so juicy their saccharine nectar drips down your chin.

and yet im not quite ready to part with the introspective & inward energies of winter. even if the weather has caused me to cancel or postpone every other plan. snow days for days.

this time of year feels important. the last vestiges of something akin to rest (despite the onslaught of gregorian calendars & the horrendous 'time change'). time to gather your dreams from their wintery incubation & perhaps to stir & shake them into potting soil with your early springs seeds.

spring is like a favorite aunt. we anticipate her arrival. the stirrings of spring begin to ferment within us too, manifesting as urges to sweep winters cobwebs from the ceiling with haphazard lengths of broom handles & teetering reaches. cleaning out the pantry of what is left from last years dried herbs. will the stores of dried nettles last until the fresh ones emerge from the earth? this year yes, but the chamomile & oatstraw is long gone & the tulsi has been begged & borrowed to last the season.

time to recalibrate & celebrate small practises of care, for ourselves & others. morning walks, listening to returning birdsong.

is it sad that warm weather brings back to my mind issues like clearcutting & glyph0sate spraying? the need to protect the forests of mi'kma'ki? for some, there is no break with the weather, good folks have been holding down the fort to prevent clearcutting in annapolis county, rain or snow.

seeing the blatant disrespect for the environment in the recent budget & position cuts. .. as well as the arts, mi'kmaq & black & african programs & initiatives, libraries, education, museums & so much more.

what is going on??

thank you to everyone who is speaking out & showing up. let us dream of spring. let us dream of new worlds, community care, community gardens & food forests. let us dream into reality for everyone's basic needs to be met, webs of care & reciprocity. of sun warmed blueberries & peppermint lemonade.

the nursery is now accepting spring 𝚙𝚛𝚎-𝚘𝚛𝚍𝚎𝚛𝚜. we have a wide selection of hardy fruit & nut trees, berries, bareroot perennials, tubers, cuttings & much more.

are you dreaming of spring? the sap is already running on warm days, bird song is growing louder, and even though we can expect some more weeks of winter, spring is not far off. time to begin thinking & dreaming of spring planting, seed starting & food forest planning!

globally we can expect to anticipate a lot more uncertainty with food security in the years to come. with tariff increases & fuel blockages & shortages afar, who knows where your berries & fruit will come from & for how long.

we can move through these thoughts without fear if we are able to think of implementing our own food systems & community growing goals. growing your own food allows you to foster connection with the land you live on, as well as access to incredibly fresh & nutrient dense food (that you can be sure isn't sprayed with chemicals).
