Did you know that bee's communicate through dance? πŸ•ΊπŸ’ƒ

What may look like just a little wiggle is actually an important message to the rest of the colony.

This sweet honeybee gal is doing something called the waggle dance. Through it, she is telling her sisters the location of a new food source she just found. 🌼

Using the sun as their compass(🀯), the direction of the waggle tells the bees which way to fly. β˜€οΈπŸ§

And the length of the waggle can indicate how far they'll have to travel.

It’s pretty incredible to think that a tiny bee can come home from a field of flowers and tell the entire colony exactly where to find them. πŸ“

Thank you so much Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada for the kind recognition.

As both face their own challenges, it's really wonderful to see organizations shining a light on the women in agriculture, especially during the International Year of the Woman Farmer, as well as the agriculture industry in Newfoundland as a whole.

πŸ¦‹πŸͺ² Happy Pollinator Week 🐝🐦
June 22nd-28th

From strawberries, to apples, to pumpkins, and so much in between, pollinators play a massive role in bringing our food to life.

In fact, about 1/3 of the food we consume is thanks to pollinators, who aren't just bees, but also wasps, beetles, birds, moths, bats, and butterflies to name a few.

Here at Rainbow Ridge, we strive to farm in ways that protect and encourage these tiny workers, like avoiding harmful chemicals and leaving some wild spaces to just be wild.

This week especially, you can help celebrate and support pollinators by doing things like:
🌼 Planting native flowers
🐝 Supporting local honey producers
🚫 Reducing pesticide use
🌿 Waiting a little longer to mow your lawn
πŸͺ° Saving the bug that would've been squished

Small actions make a big differenceπŸ’›

Winter coats in mid-June? Classic Newfoundland. 🫠

Even with the challenging weather, we're well into our first growing season here at Rainbow Ridge Farm. The days are long, the muscles are sore, and the to-do list never seems to end, but seeing Pop's farm come to life makes it all worthwhile.

We can't wait to bring our fresh, delicious, chemical-free produce to all of our amazing supporters and to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. πŸŒ±πŸ’š

Just over a year has passed since I was offered the incredible opportunity from to join their farming mentorship program with . This opportunity has launched me into the farming world, was a big push for the new beginning of Rainbow Ridge, and has truly changed the way I see my future in farming.

I wanted to say a huge thank you to NL Young Farmers for all the great work they do to support new farmers and promote farming in Newfoundland! Opportunities like this truly matter, and they shape the next generation of farmers in ways that go far beyond the field.🌱

And also a massive thank you to everyone at Windy Heights who shared their knowledge so generously, and welcomed me in to learn alongside them. From foraging in the woods, beekeeping, seeing the business side of farming, planting seedlings, learning about regenerative agriculture, driving a tractor for the first time, and everything else in between... every experience, and each one of you taught me something valuable. I'm looking forward to our continuing and future farming adventures together!🐝

This mentorship program is the main reason I am where I am in the farming world today. If you're interested in the agriculture world, I highly recommend reaching out to NL Young Farmers!
