🍯 It’s nearly harvest time! 🍯

It’s warm, it’s sunny and the bees are very active hauling in nectar.

We’ll be planning to pull some of the first 2026 honey out of the fields as early as this weekend before the canola honey crystallizes within the frames…it’s about to get very busy for the JQ Honey crew!

Queen Bee Laying Eggs!

When inspecting this colony, this queen bee was determined to continue laying eggs on this frame mid inspection giving us a great opportunity for a quick video. A queen bee can lay up to 2000 eggs per day during the peak of her laying cycle! This is the time where colonies can easily get overcrowded which lead to swarming.

Jaxon and I were checking one of the beeyards today to see the progress the bees have made with capping honey. Bees will cap and seal their honey with beeswax when the moisture content is at the proper levels which is typically under 18%. This ensures the honey will not be exposed to further moisture or potential contamination. This is also an indication that the honey is ready to be harvested.

Another day, another swarm! Luckily this one wasn’t high in the tree and was a quick recovery. This will be relocated to one of our yards in the morning after the stragglers have found their way into their new home. 🐝 🍯

Quinton was a big help completing some hive inspections in the home beeyard today. He's a little shy but wanted to point out this jam packed hive we inspected today. Swarm risk is still very high right now but we're trying to give every colony sufficient space to mitigate that risk.

I now owe Quinton $5 as he beat me in finding the queen in this colony. He's got quite the eye for spotting them lately!

This swarm appears to have set up camp a few weeks ago under the overhang of this barn. The queen has been laying eggs for a solid week or two.

It’s swarm season! Managed to spot a huge swarm mid flight as I was heading to one of the beeyards. With the excessive heat these last couple days, the chances of swarming increase drastically as colony populations are exploding. When the hive becomes overcrowded there is limited space for the old queen to lay eggs during a nectar flow. This triggers the impulse to swarm where she will leave with approximately half the bees to search for a new home after a new queen is in the process of being grown within the colony.

The canola fields are in full bloom! The pollinators are loving it, including our honey bees. While canola honey has its downsides with faster crystallization it sure is tasty. It's also a great early source of nectar after dandelions go to seed.

A new queen bee recently hatched in a split we made last week. Today we were able to save one of the extra queen cells in the colony before it was eliminated by the new queen. We will try to introduce it to a queenless hive this weekend.
