Our Story.....

Our story began with my first horse Tessa. I bought her when I was 16 years old and worked my butt off to keep her! Took her to university with me and everything. My parents always thought I was crazy, which is why I worked so hard and proved them wrong. However, life began to get complicated, health issues arose and eventually, when I moved to Northern Alberta I mistakenly left her in the wrong hands. Tessa ended up at an auction being bid on by kill-buyers for horse meat. People banded together and out-bid the kill-buyers, and now she is in a great place until the day she does cross over to the pasture in the sky.

Piper is my newest addition, she was a children’s camp horse for many years, ALMOST sent to auction for slaughter, she was saved and re-homed to me, and is now enjoying her retirement at DS Horse Haven North with her new four-legged friends, Chickie, Marley and Whiskey. These 4 horses are our permanent residents, and they will NEVER go to auction.

Until more land is acquired, or foster families are identified, we are in a position to rescue one horse at a time from the cruel fate of Canada’s horse slaughter industry. Many people do not know the sad truth of the suffering many horses endure that end up in the hands of the kill-buyers. Additionally, Canada is exporting live horses overseas for human consumption, and the laws around transportation are quite flimsy and rarely, if ever enforced. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is currently being sued with respect to this matter, which actually ripples over to ALL livestock transportation, whether it be horses, cattle and pigs, etc.

Most recently, a horse was dumped at the Westlock Auction which three or more horse rescues in both Alberta and BC, and more than 200 people advocated and donated to rescue “Rusty”, a horse that could barely stand in the holding pen due to being starved for what appears to be for approximately one year. Rusty’s story touched my heart, as well as my husband’s, and we sent a small amount of money towards her rescue and veterinary assessment. Rusty was to be euthanized upon her rescue; however, she has MUCH fight left in her and continues to gain strength at C&M Horse Haven in Olds, Alberta. Charges may be laid, and I continue to wait for any updates with respect to the outcome of this.
