I’ve been getting quite a few messages asking when the U-pick will be opening this year, and I’ve been biting my nails looking at what I have flowering and when I expect the rest to be flowering.

After a few weeks of this I have some disappointing news - I’ve decided that I’m not going to do the U-pick this year.

For me, the U-pick is not just about the flowers, but about the experience - coming out to see a beautiful field full of many different types of flowers, wandering through the rows, and having lots of choice to pick all kinds of different things. Unfortunately, that’s not the case this year.

We had a challenging spring in a number of ways - including a rather determined gopher population who apparently decided that my flower seedlings were planted especially for them. Between the losses early in the season and a few other setbacks, the flower field is much sparser than it normally would be, and I’d rather not open than offer you something that isn’t the experience I want it to be.

I am really disappointed. I love doing the U-pick and am going to miss all of you this year. But I’m going to spend the rest of the summer preparing for next year so that it is better than ever.

This hot, dry weather means we have to do a lot of watering… and that means lots of extra work hauling water to fill our 1,250-gallon water tank.

“Don’t you have a water tap?” you might be asking.

We do! But we’re on well water, and testing has shown that it’s high in dissolved salts.

When salt levels are too high, it becomes much harder for plants to absorb the water they need. Even if the soil is moist, the plants can struggle because the salts interfere with water uptake.

That’s why we irrigate with municipal water - but we have to haul it ourselves. I made three of these trips yesterday. By the time you factor in the driving and transferring the water, each trip takes about an hour.

So the next time you hook up your garden hose and turn on the sprinkler, take a moment to appreciate having high-quality water right at your fingertips. It’s one of those everyday things that’s easy to take for granted!

The peonies are finally starting to bloom 😃.

If you are cutting peonies to enjoy inside, the best time to cut them is at the “marshmallow” stage. This is when the buds have softened and feel like a marshmallow, but before they start to open. This will ensure they last as long as possible in a vase.
