Our Story

Roger learned how to make maple syrup from his father on their farm in Quebec when he was a little boy. As a young man, Roger chose to explore different job opportunities in various provinces until he settled in Ontario. He and his wife, Marguerite, moved to Richmond Hill and started their family. When his children were young, Roger would visit his sister in Quebec each year, in the spring, and head out to the old shack on his mother’s property and make maple syrup for the family. Roger & Marguerite purchased a property on Baptiste Lake and began building a cottage. Roger spent many weekends working on the cottage, which meant that there were fewer opportunities to visit his sister in Quebec, and less maple syrup making for Roger during those years. Roger, feeling reminiscent of making maple syrup with his family, with Marguerite by his side, purchased a property not far from the cottage to be used as a sugar bush. The first couple of years, Roger tapped a few trees with buckets, built his own little evaporator which he installed in front of his cottage and made syrup for his family and friends. Word spread that Roger was making maple syrup, and neighbours starting coming around to see how it was done. They become some of our first customers. When Roger & Marguerite moved to their cottage, making that their full time residence, Roger began building a sugar shack on the property and each year since, has made small and large improvements to Roger’s Sugar Shack. Roger and Marguerite are celebrating the Sugar Shack’s 25th anniversary this year. It was in 1993 that Roger & Marguerite first began selling maple syrup. They registered the business the following year, and since then, it has been known as Roger’s Sugar Shack.
