Pig buying season is right around the corner for many. Did you know that all pig movements need to be recorded through PigTRACE. If you are selling them, purchasing, or off to an abattoir.
Different types of movements or animals require different identification. For more information check out the link below.

Hey Guys! We just celebrated international pig day on Mar 1!

I know all you pig lovers do your best to keep your pigs happy, fed, and healthy. This month I was thinking of doing a:
"What's going on with my pig?" webinar.

If you have any weird case/question/situation that you would like to address, feel free to message Kelsey Gray Veterinarian in advance or you can also ask live during our webinar!

Any case we discuss will remain completely anonymous to protect the privacy of the people and the pigs. I will go over a few common generic diseases as well.

Details TBD!!!

For all those producers in Alberta. A case of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea was recently confirmed in southern Alberta. Vehicle and foot traffic is the main way this virus spreads.

A case of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv) has been confirmed on a farm in southern Alberta, the province’s first since February 2022.

🌱 Preparing for Spring Tip #4: Maintain a consistent health program for your herd. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of a cure.

How to avoid disease:
◾ Vaccinate regularly
◾ Utilize perimeter fencing to avoid nose-to-nose contact with wild animals

Contact your vet if:
◾ There is a high number of sick or dead pigs
◾ Pigs become sick or die of unknown causes
◾ You notice severe and/or bloody diarrhea
◾ You notice nervousness or behaviour changes
◾ You notice a severe hacking cough
◾ Pigs are lethargic, listless or depressed
◾ There is a rapid spread of signs/symptoms

Daily herd checks are important. Find more resources on what to look for here: https://smallscalepigfarming.com/disease-prevention/.

🌱 Preparing for Spring Tip #3: Make the necessary upgrades to your pigs' shelters.

Warmer weather doesn't necessarily mean pigs need their shelters less. In the warmer months, they utilize them during cool nights and to find shade in the heat.

✅ Make sure there are readily available shelters in every pasture or pen
✅ The shelters should be big enough that all the pigs can lie down at once
✅ Shelters should be solid, as pigs can be very destructive
✅ Always provide a dry nesting area
