Hurkett Hill Farm We grow, raise, forage, love DIY, build with salvaged materials & our own timber. Our 15 year old little homestead overlooks Northshore Lake Superior.

Milk & meat goats, chickens, ducks, turkeys, rabbits, bees, market gardens & an awesome farmstand.šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦ā¤ļø We love harvesting forest and freshwater foods, growing our own vegetables, raising our our own goats, chickens, and turkeys and sharing all of those skills with people. These are becoming lost skills in our modern world. So, please follow us as we travel this road of a self reliant small scale farm in Northern Ontario. We also sell what we grow, raise and collect. Farm gate sales start in June and we attend local Farmers Markets. We will also post other items for sale or contact us directly if you are looking for something special. I had the best sleep of my life last night. It is such a relief having Lewis home safe and sound. The past week has felt like a dream and we still canā€™t believe this happened and the positive outcome at the end was just the chefā€™s kiss. Lewis looked a bit sleepy this morning but doing well. Need to get some groceries in that little boy as heā€™s looking a bit skinny. Good thing goats are all guts and love the task.
So, back to regular farm life now ā¤ļø
The farmstand is open this weekend stocked with lots of fall veggies grown right here on our farm - celery, squash (butternut, acorn & spaghetti), cabbages, potatoes (Iā€™ll bag some up russets today), lots of cool pumpkins left to decorate your porch, dinner table or Halloween decor. Unpasteurized honey and other crafts and treasures available as well.
If you are picking up your Hurkett Community Centre pies, they are labeled with your name on the box. We donā€™t have any extra pies for sale so please donā€™t take any pies if you didnā€™t preorder one.

Lewis Update: Got some pain meds from the vet today as Lewis was grinding his teeth and favouring his back leg but heā€™s feeling much better tonight. He scalped his ear on something this morning as it was a super fresh wound and bleeding when we finally got him. Itā€™s superficial but we bandaged to keep clean. He also had a large bump on top of his head behind his horns. We wonder if he got caught in the old Hwy fencing or took a tumble. Weā€™ll take him in to the vet or have them out if required but he didnā€™t need that today.
Heā€™s getting back to his normal self already which is amazing.
He slept most of the day and didnā€™t even wake up when I checked on him multiple times.
Stall rest for a few more days while we check fences. He was scared when he went over the fence but my heart canā€™t take another episode like this one.
Lots of Lewis love out there ā¤ļø Who knew a lost goat would rally so many people! I met a lot of the neighbours which is really nice. A community of great people (looking at all of you!) came together and made it happen.
My parent brought over a small ā€œLewis Cakeā€ they got in town today to celebrate. It was really a great way to end the day and a very stressful week. Sorry Lewis, it was chocolate so you didnā€™t get anyā€¦..

The news that weā€™ve all been hoping for - Lewis is HOME.

I canā€™t thank Lauren Dumonski enough as she was able to grab him as he walked up to her after crossing the Hwy.

Thanks to absolutely everyone who called in sightings, patrolled, shared posts, suggestions and well wishes. We absolutely canā€™t thank you all enough. ā¤ļø

He has torn his ear but weā€™ve got it bandaged up. No other apparent injuries. Heā€™s absolutely exhausted. Hanging out with his mom in the barn to decompress

Please no visitors for awhile - weā€™re all exhausted. ļæ¼

Itā€™s a truely happy Thanksgiving.

UPDATE: Lewis was found yesterday!

Possible Lewis sighting at Sawmill Rd just a little bit ago. Goat tracks look like deer tracks but fresh tracks in the fields across the road in the soft mud.
Please keep an eye out in that area and please PHONE me at 807-630-5668 if you see him.
Jim said we should mock up a milk carton for him. šŸ˜‚ If it is him, then heā€™s made it 6 nights in the bush and countless Hwy crossings šŸ«£

7 hours of searching tonight with no Lewis sightings. Jim will head out around 5AM.
We just hope he hasnā€™t picked up the hydro line east of Valley Rd as that likely means weā€™ve lost lost him. The Hwy is a double edged sword - good as more people travel it for reporting but definitely dangerous with traffic.
Anyways - will check the live trap in the morning which would be a miracle and figure out the days plans.
Met quite a few people today who went out to look for Lewis themselves. All I can say is thank you from the bottom of my heart. I hope we get him soon so life can go back to original programming!
And thanks to my friends for coming out as a search party.
If anyone sees our little hero, please PHONE me and I donā€™t care if itā€™s 3am!

Lewis update: Wednesday
Two sightings today - Valley Rd East, he was headed north. Dog trap set along there. He was there about 5 mins before we got there. Jimā€™s been calling him Mr. Snuffleupagus. Took our little buck for a ride around the neighbourhood as we hoped his skink would draw him out. They share a pen in the barn so he knows him.
He now has an OPP file open - fugitive! lol But jokes aside- we are worried heā€™ll cause an accident for someone and we donā€™t want that.
Still tracking down leads and contacts for a thermal drone so thanks for all that info.
Lots of suggestions of what we could try and believe me, lots we have. Lewis is in feral mode so not responding like the pasture pets at home.

Another Lewis sighting tonight after seeing nothing all day.
We did manage to borrow a large live trap used for catching dogs but itā€™s set up in the opposite direction of his travel tonight. Turned into quite the nocturnal goatā€¦..
Heā€™d gone into the bush before we got here. Thanks to Tamera, Mark & Nelson who notified us. We were dead asleep after patrolling the Hwy and doing a lot of walking all day. Jimā€™s got over 88,000 steps the past 3 daysā€¦..
Now taking turns tonight to see if he pops back out onto the Hwy. Fingers crossed!
I do wish people would move over if youā€™re on the side of the Hwy!

All of our vegetables are grown right on our farm or across the road at my parents. Dad is my market garden partner. We have had produce from other local farms like my uncle growing beets for us but weā€™re 100% Northern Ontario grown!
