The 2026 Knee Hill Valley 4H Beef Club Achievement Day has come and gone and we couldn't be more proud of our four boys, Colby, Kaden, Lincoln and Austin. It was a long, hot day but they held it together and came out victorious.

We were not sure what to expect when consigning to this Best Of The West online sale, but knew if we were going to consign, it truly needed to be the best. Impact was bred specifically for our program, but with the success of our IVF this year and knowing we wanted to make a splash, he was the right one. We are excited, but also a bit overwhelmed and humbled that fellow breeders see this value in our genetics that we have spent the past 25 years developing.

After 6 years of running our old reliable Milky pasteurizer, it was time to get a new shiny version!

Our kids are raised on heat treated milk for reasons of disease prevention. This is something that initially we were hesitant on as we also herd health test semi annually. However, when it comes down to it, there are things such as subclinical mastitis that can often go undetected for an extended period of time and we feel that this truly offers our kids the gold standard of upbringing. Although this does add more time, cost and work into the feeding process, we feel it is worth it for not only our own replacement stock, but also for the kids that are moving on into new herds and becoming the cornerstone of someone else's program.

Many people do not realize the the small things that go into the cost of raising purebred breeding stock and this is yet another one that maybe you want to consider when purchasing your next future herdsire or foundation female. What does the upbringing of these kids look like and is there potentially anything lingering that they may be carrying with them into your operation? There will always be risks of bringing new animals into your program, but what risks are you willing to take and what are you comfortable with?

We finished our first milk test last week in the wake of a big snow storm and of course now that the ladies are back sun tanning, they are slowly picking up production again. We love being able to let our does go out and graze the pastures in the summer time and watch them sun bathe in the warm sun, however, there are always goods and bads to each situation. We have been fighting with some super challenging weather this year and it for sure has taken a toll on us all here. However, we do our best each day to keep our ladies well fed, warm and happy throughout the year, with fresh bedding, ample good quality hay, balanced minerals and clean water. Farming comes with its own challenges, never mind mother nature throwing a kink in things throughout the year. We can only hope that the snow storms have calmed for at least a few months and we can all start enjoying the warm sunshine around here!
