The final weekend of summer is upon us. We have one more quick little adventure planned and then it willl be getting ready for what is always one of the busiest months of the year!

I had the opportunity to wander through the gardens the last couple of days and hand pick some flowers for a couple of special arrangements. I don't often have time to do that, I just harvest, harvest, harvest and then arrange from the cooler. But it was nice to slow down and pick intentionally. With every month the palettes change a bit and I love in fall that we can have bright and colourful, moody or muted tones.

The garden roses in this arrangement smelled heavenly and I can't get over what a stellar season the roses have given me!!

So, onto an adventure and then I will be back with news on pumpkins and fall flowers although I suspect I will generally be a little quieter on here and slower to respond to messages as we head into a very busy month! Have a wonderful and safe long weekend everyone.

Well we were away for just a few nights and I had the cooler cleaned right out and I got home tonight and it was full! Thanks to my mom for harvesting while I was away - the dahlias know September is almost here and they are starting to explode!

I have some mixed bouquets as well as the first straight dahlia bunches of the season ready for pick up at Amplifies on Tuesday. Pick-up at LBB can also be arranged this week, just PM if you would prefer to pick-up here. Thanks!

It's hard to believe we are headed into the final week of August, it seems like we were just celebrating the end of school and now a new year starts again in just two weeks!
I always take time at the end of the summer to soak in some family time and then try to get prepared for the busy months ahead. Having said that, it's a time of year when the blooms are coming in hot! I am finishing up subscriptikns over the next 3 weeks but will also have a few grab n' go bouquets each week.
I will have some bouquets available for pick-up on Tuesday this week and then that will be it for flowers this week - so many dahlias and zinnias in beautiful colours! Bouquets will be at Amplified Cafe 9am-6pm Tuesday. Please order through the website.

Celebrating with an ode to August and its abundance before it slips away...
I love the transition from August to September when the mornings start to feel cool and fresh but the days are still warm. My harvest buckets begin to overflow with dahlias, zinnias, grains, hydrangeas and the cool season flowers begin to send up another flush of their blooms.
The summer palettes start to get a hint of pumpkin spice to warm them up and the textures of the bouquets are amazing. It's the time when I have to try and have restraint and edit my bouquets because there are just so many ingredients to choose from!
Even in such a challenging growing season, I am amazed at the abundance and diversity that August gardens offer and am grateful for it.
Every week throughout the entire growing season, the bouquets change because new flowers are ready and others have faded and to me it is truly what makes locally grown bouquets and arrangements so unique and enduring.
I am ready for fall weather but not ready to let these last couple of weeks of summer go just yet. It's the calm before the storm when you have kids and before the fall work really starts in the gardens.
We are lucky to live in a place of such abundance but its been a challenging year for all growers and farmers so take advantage of the abundance this month can offer and support your local growers and farmers and celebrate all that we produce here in BC!

Ahhhh, some years everything goes so smoothly and other years feel like one big calamity 😬. This season has definitely had some calamities and tonight my absolutely wonderful and trusty walk in cooler went on the fritz 😫. I really can't complain as it has run reliably for 9 years in all sorts of conditions and I think the recent smoke may have just been too much for its old filtration systems to handle.

I LOVE my walk in cooler and it's imperative to what I do. We will work to get it back up and running ASAP, but if you are a "Year in Flowers" subscriber I have sent you an email about some adjustments to pick-up of the next bouquet to work around this so please check your inbox.

In happy news, there are some gorgeous sunflowers, dahlias, zinnias and roses coming in this week!

As we have seen in the interior over the last couple of weeks, things can change in a moment so I am really appreciating every bloom, every bouquet and every basket of produce I bring in from the gardens right now ❤️.

Well the plan had been to spend part of the weekend on a miuntain top under the stars...the smoke and fire situation put those plans on hold. I felt extremely lucky as I harvested in the gardens this morning for the calm around me and the fact that we are safe at home. Thinking of all those who have had to flee their homes and livelihoods this weekend and hoping rain and cooler weather finds its way to us soon!

I made the first bouquets of the SoLong Summer Subscription today and I have a few extras if anyone would like them. They will be at Amplified on Tuesday and are up on the online store. Stat safe everyone!

Flowers are the space where my creative and scientific minds collide. I have always enjoyed creative projects and equally so, all aspects of biology. Bouquets are composed in my thoughts months before they are designed in my hands. When you grow the flowers you design with, you are always working backwards from bouquet to seed. Ultimately, if I don't plant it, I don't have it to work with.

This season was a bit different for me because I decided not to take on weddings. In past seasons, a lot of what I grew was determined by the colour and flower preferences of my wedding clients. This year, I had free rein! When, I am planning I am looking at each month of the season and I knew in August I wanted a palette that reflected baskets of Okanagan peaches and freshly sliced watermelon fresh out of the garden. The bouquets I made this week brought that vision to fruition and I love them!

It is so easy to get swept away by flowers on social media and in seed catalogues and wanting to grow everything in all the colours, but given my small growing space, I have definitely learned to have a lot more self-discipline in my growing over the years so that I am able to use every stem I grow and hopefully in a composed way. There always a few outliers and things I look at and say "why did I grow that again?!" But it's such a good feeling when the picture I created almost a year ago comes to life in my hands and year of work is realized 😊
