Some really great ideas here ๐
This fall weather is giving us all the PEELS! Check out these handy tips for those leftover apple peels to help avoid waste ๐
Culinary uses:
1. Apple chips: Toss peels with cinnamon and sugar, spread on a baking sheet, and bake at around 250F for an hour, flipping halfway through, until crispy.
2. Apple tea: Boil peels with water and spices like cinnamon, cloves, or nutmeg, then strain for a fragrant tea.
3. Apple cider vinegar: Combine peels with water and a little sugar in a jar, cover, and let ferment in a warm, dark place for several weeks.
4. Add to other recipes: Chop and add them to pancake or waffle batter for a fiber boost or blend them into smoothies.
5. Apple scrap jelly: Use the peels and cores to make jelly, either by simmering them to extract pectin or by cooking them down with sugar and spices.
Not a fan of the kitchen? How about:
1. Composting: Add peels to a compost pile to enrich the compost with nutrients.
2. Direct fertilization: Bury peels about 8 inches deep in your garden to naturally fertilize the soil.
3. Compost tea: Steep peels in water for at least 24 hours and then use the nutrient-rich liquid to water your plants.
4. Aromatherapy: Dry peels and use them in a simmer pot with water and spices for a pleasant aroma.
