Today we are taking the time to reflect on our horrifying history as a nation. We honour the children who never returned home from the residential school system, as well as the Survivors and their families.

BUT it's not enough to just say all of these things. There needs to be action behind these words. What does honouring the children, Survivors and families mean?

For me, a huge aspect of Truth and Reconciliation is EDUCATION. Recently I learned a great lesson that I would like to share with you:

➡ I was at a local market where an Indigenous vendor was selling beaded jewellery she made. I fell in love with this one piece, but felt that maybe it wasn't appropriate for me as a white non-Indigenous person to wear it. So I asked. As uncomfortable as it was to start that conversation, the vendor explained to me the difference between appropriation and appreciation.

I learned that APPRECIATION is honouring and celebrating the art or artist, while also acquiring knowledge and understanding of that culture. APPROPRIATION is taking an aspect of another culture that is not your own, and using it for personal interest or gain.

➡Such a great lesson that I never would have learned if I didn't ask. I will continue educating myself on Indigenous culture and history, to help take steps towards truth and reconciliation.
