Cover crop oats in next year's vegetable field!

It's been tricky to get things done between the rains the last few weeks but I found a window to get these oats in. They will grow and create a cover over the soil before dying in the winter, leaving a straw like cover over the soil to prevent erosion and inhibit early weeds in next year's vegetables.

I also grew the oat seed I'm using. Feeling pretty chuffed about that part!

Gotta start getting ready to plant the fife.

This clean stand of clover was planted last winter into the rye that was harvested last summer. It provides great cover, smothers weeds and will help feed the biology in the soil that will help the red fife succeed.

It's all about teamwork!

Big Blue is still killing it after 10+ years at Fat Chance. It first came off the factory floor in 1981 and spent its time mostly baling hay in Inverary for Charles Barr and his family's farm. After an early retirement, Big Blue came to work with me in 2015 and has been the main workhorse for Fat Chance since then.

I really appreciate the mechanical nature of this tractor. There's no computers and a very minimal number of electronic happenings while this tractor is fired up.
